How to find B2B clients and sales leads in India

Seven ways to find business clients, and how to turn a lead into a meeting.

Describe the client before you look for sales leads

Few small businesses run short of sales leads because India has too few buyers. They run short because they look everywhere at once and follow up nowhere. Before you go looking, write two lines that describe the client you want:

  • The trade: "dental clinics", "auto-component makers", "wholesale grocers", not "businesses".
  • The size: owner-run, or big enough to have a purchase team.
  • The place: only the towns you can deliver to and support.
  • The person who decides: owner, plant head, purchase manager, HR head or doctor.
  • The moment they need you: a new branch, a new financial year, the festival season, a new machine, a failed supplier.

A Coimbatore maker of pump spares might write: "Pump dealers and repair shops in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, owner-run, the owner decides, stocks up before summer." Every source below gets easier once you have that sentence.

Seven ways to find B2B clients in India

  1. Ask the customers you already have. "Who else in your market should be using this?" works best right after a delivery has gone well or a payment has cleared. In Indian trade, word travels through markets and associations faster than through any advert.
  2. Go back to old enquiries and lost quotes. A buyer who said no six months ago may have a new problem, a new budget or a supplier who let them down.
  3. Answer buyer requirements on B2B marketplaces. Buyers post what they need on IndiaMART and TradeIndia. The same enquiry often goes to several sellers, so a quick reply with a clear rate matters more than a long company profile.
  4. Work trade fairs and association meetings. Exhibit if you can, visit if you cannot. A district industries association meeting or a trade body's monthly session puts a room of owners in front of you.
  5. Use LinkedIn for named decision-makers. Search by job title, industry and city. It is strong for mid-sized and large companies and weak for shops and small traders, and it rarely shows phone numbers. Send a short note, not a pitch.
  6. Sell to government and large buyers. Register on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) for government orders; our GeM registration guide covers the steps. Large companies buy from approved vendors, so ask how to get registered.
  7. Start from a ready contact list. When you need every business of one kind in a city or a state, a list saves weeks of copying. These are our biggest All-India lists, and each shows 60 real contacts before you buy:

Lead generation companies in India: what they sell

If you would rather pay someone to find leads, lead generation companies in India sell four quite different things. Know which one you are buying:

  • Pay-per-lead portals: enquiries from buyers, usually shared with other sellers.
  • Ad agencies: they run Google, Meta or LinkedIn ads and pass you the form fills. You pay for the ads and their fee.
  • Appointment-setting teams: telecallers who call for you and book meetings, paid per meeting or per month.
  • Data sellers: lists you work yourself. The cheapest per contact, but the selling is up to you.

Ask each one what counts as a lead, whether it is shared with competitors, what happens when a number is wrong, and for two customers you can speak to. For data sellers, our checklist for choosing a B2B data provider has the questions to ask.

From lead to meeting

  1. Reply to inbound enquiries the same working day. A buyer who filled in a form at 11 am may be talking to another supplier by evening.
  2. Qualify with four questions: What do you use now? How much do you need? By when? Who else is involved in the decision?
  3. Make the first outbound contact by phone, then send the details by email. Our telecalling scripts in Hindi and English and cold email templates give you the words for both.
  4. Ask for a small next step, not the order: a sample, a 20-minute visit, a demo on their own data, a trial order.
  5. Keep one sheet with the lead, its source, the date, the stage, the next step and the date of that step. Every Friday, look at which sources gave you clients, not just enquiries, and spend more time on those.

Questions people ask

How do I find clients when my business is new?

If you are working out how to find clients with no track record, start with the people who know you: former employers, suppliers, your CA and your trade association. Offer a small first order or a trial at fair terms, and ask every early customer for a reference you can mention on calls.

Are paid leads worth the money?

Only if you follow them up quickly and track what they turn into. Work out what one new client is worth to you over a year, then see what you paid in leads to win one. Drop any source that costs more than it brings in after two or three months.

How to get business leads with almost no budget?

Your time replaces money. Set up free listings, answer marketplace enquiries daily, ask every customer for one referral, call old enquiries, and attend local association meetings. These cost little and bring buyers who already trust someone you know.
