Temple trade, jasmine and small industry

A list of companies in Madurai is a different thing from one for Chennai or Coimbatore. Job seekers searching for it tend to find only a handful of large employers. Sellers find something richer: merchants in the old city around the Meenakshi Amman temple, small factories in the SIDCO estates, and service firms that cater to the whole of south Tamil Nadu, nearly all of them run by the families that own them.

Temple-town trade: cloth, sarees, jewellery, brass and puja goods, sweets and flowers in the streets around the temple, plus the lodges, hotels, caterers and travel agents that live off pilgrims and tourists.
Madurai Malli: the city's jasmine, which carries a GI tag, moves from growers through commission agents at the flower market to garland makers, retailers and buyers in other cities.
SIDCO estates: Kappalur and K Pudur hold engineering, rubber and textile units, and granite is quarried and cut elsewhere in the district.
Textiles: handloom and powerloom weaving, cotton sarees such as the tie-dyed Sungudi, garment makers and cloth wholesalers.
IT, health and education: the ELCOT IT park and smaller software firms, and hospitals and colleges that draw people from the neighbouring districts.

Pick one of these groups before you buy. A rubber compound supplier needs the units at Kappalur, not the cloth merchants near the temple, and the two need different calls.

Registers, estates and associations: the free route

MCA master data covers only firms registered as companies or LLPs, searched by name. Madurai's merchants and weavers are mostly sole owners or partnership firms, so few of them show up.
SIDCO describes its estates, and ELCOT its IT parks. Neither publishes tenants with phone numbers.
The District Industries Centre deals with MSME schemes and loans in Madurai district. It will tell you where the clusters are, not who to ring.
The chamber of commerce and the trade associations of the city's merchants keep member directories, usually for members only and often on paper.

Selling with a list of companies in Madurai

Open in Tamil. Merchants in the old city and owners of small units are most comfortable in it; hospitals, IT firms and exporters are happy in English. Translate our calling script before your first round.
Make the offer local and concrete. For example: "Vanakkam, I am Meena from a carton maker in Kappalur. We make printed boxes sized for sarees and sweets. Shall I bring samples to your shop this week?"
Visit the old city early. The streets around the temple fill up as the day goes on and parking is hard. Meet shop owners in the morning, before the crowds, or late in the evening.
Know the calendar. The Chithirai festival, in April or May, brings the year's biggest crowds, so pitch to hotels, caterers and shops well before it. Around Pongal in mid-January, expect a few quiet days. Jasmine is seasonal too: supply falls in the cooler months and prices jump, so ask flower traders when their busy weeks are before you pitch.
