Where owners' numbers come from, what to check, and how to pitch the person who decides.

What a businessman directory gives you

A businessman directory is a list of people who own and run businesses: the proprietor of a hardware shop in Indore, the partners of a knitwear unit in Tiruppur, the director of a small engineering firm in Rajkot. A business directory lists firms with a shop or office phone; a directory of owners puts the owner's own name and mobile number first. That matters, because in a small Indian business the owner decides almost every purchase.

Owners run their firms in a few legal forms, and the form tells you whom to ask for:

  • Sole proprietorships, the most common form among small businesses, from kirana shops to traders and workshops. The proprietor is the business.
  • Partnership firms and LLPs, common in trading families and professional firms. Any partner can usually decide, but one tends to handle buying.
  • Private limited companies, where the owner is usually also the managing director.

The search says "businessman", but the owners in a good list are men and women alike.

Where owners' numbers come from

  • The GST portal. Its public taxpayer search shows the legal name, trade name, status and address for a GSTIN or PAN. For a proprietorship, the legal name is the owner's own name. It gives no phone number.
  • The Udyam portal confirms that an Udyam (MSME) registration number is genuine, one number at a time.
  • The MCA portal names the directors of companies and the designated partners of LLPs.
  • Market and trade associations, such as the traders' body of a wholesale market or the association of an industrial estate, keep member lists with owners' numbers. They share them with members, not outsiders.
  • Directory sites and visiting cards from trade fairs. Directory sites usually show a shop or call-centre number; our guide to business directory sites compares them.

Put together, these sources tell you that a business exists and who owns it. They rarely tell you how to reach the owner directly, which is what a businessman contact number list adds.

Our businessman data: owners' numbers by city

Our Business Owners & Proprietors list has 3,27,377 owners in 1,586 cities and towns. Nearly every row gives the owner's name, and 98% have a mobile number. The biggest groups are in Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Bengaluru.

Know its limits before you buy. It does not say what trade each owner is in, so it suits offers that any owner can use. If you need owners in one trade, start from an industry list or the full business directory below. Few rows have an email address, so plan on calls, visits and opted-in WhatsApp rather than email.

Every list page shows 60 real rows and has a free Excel sample, and you can buy just one of 108 city lists if you work locally. To join owners from several cities in one file, use the list builder.

Offers that suit any owner

  • Business loans and working capital from banks, NBFCs and loan agents, especially before the festive season, when traders stock up.
  • Payments: current accounts, card machines and UPI QR soundboxes.
  • Accounts and compliance: GST filing, bookkeeping and billing software, from CA firms and software sellers.
  • Insurance: shop and stock insurance, health cover for the family, and keyman cover.
  • Getting found online: a simple website, a Google Business Profile, and a product catalogue on WhatsApp.
  • The premises: rooftop solar for owners of shops and factories with their own roof, CCTV, inverters and signboards.

How to pitch the owner who decides

  1. Say who you are and why them, in one line. For example: "Namaste Patel bhai, I am calling from Ahmedabad about a UPI soundbox that announces every payment in Gujarati. Do you take UPI at your counter?" A call in the owner's own language usually goes further than one in English.
  2. Pick the hour. Shops are busiest at opening time and in the evening, so call between 11:30 am and 1 pm or between 3 and 5 pm. Factory owners are often freer after lunch. Respect the market's weekly holiday, and skip Diwali week unless you sell festive credit or stock.
  3. Expect three questions: what it costs in total, whether there are hidden charges, and who will come to set it up. Answer with one figure, not a range.
  4. Offer a visit or a trial. Owners buy from people they have met, and a ten-minute visit to the shop often turns a polite call into an order.
  5. Follow the calling rules. An owner's personal mobile may be on the DND register. Read our DND check guide before you start, and prepare with our Hindi and English telecalling scripts.

Questions people ask about businessmen lists

What is businessman data?

It usually means owners' and proprietors' names with their mobile numbers, the business name and the city. Ours has 3,27,377 owners, 98% with a mobile number and very few emails, so treat it as a calling list.

Can I legally call business owners from a bought list?

The rules that matter most are about how you contact people. Promotional calls and SMS must follow TRAI's TCCCPR, including the DND register, and personal data should be used for a clear purpose, with opt-outs and removal requests honoured. Take advice on how the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies to your business. Anyone listed can ask us to remove their details.

Can I get a list of business owners in my own city?

Yes. Pick your city from the rows above or from our cities and states page. If it is missing, request a custom list and say which towns you need.
