Who is in a chartered accountants list

A chartered accountants list is a sheet of CA practices with the partner's name, mobile number, email, city and the kind of work the firm does. People look for one for two reasons: to sell something to CA firms, or to find a CA for their own business in another city. Both need the same thing: practising CAs, sorted by city, with a number that a partner answers.

Most CA practices in India are small. A typical one is a proprietor or two to five partners, a few article assistants and an office near the town's main market. Above them sit mid-sized firms with branches in several cities, and then the large audit networks. Their work falls into a few areas:

• Audit: statutory audits of companies, tax audits, bank branch audits and internal audits.
• Direct tax: income tax returns, TDS, assessments and appeals.
• GST: registrations, monthly returns, reconciliations and replies to notices.
• Company and startup work: incorporations, ROC filings, valuations and project reports for bank loans, often alongside a company secretary.
• Bookkeeping and payroll for small businesses that have no accountant of their own.

Many people who call themselves tax consultants or GST practitioners are not chartered accountants. They can prepare and file returns, but only a chartered accountant can sign a company's statutory audit report. If that matters to you, filter on the category column.

Checking a CA or CA firm with ICAI

Every chartered accountant is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). Its website has a member and firm verification facility: enter a membership number or a firm registration number (FRN) and it confirms the name and registration details. Two more checks help:

• UDIN. Certificates and reports a CA signs carry a Unique Document Identification Number, which anyone can check on ICAI's UDIN portal. Banks use it to catch forged CA certificates.
• GST and MCA. Many CA firms have a GSTIN, and some are LLPs. The GST portal's taxpayer search and the MCA portal's master data confirm the legal name, address and status.

These tools answer "is this person a CA?" one record at a time. They do not give you a city's CA firms with mobile numbers, so people build lists slowly from referrals and local directories, or buy one ready-made.

Who buys a list of chartered accountants in India

• Accounting, GST and tax software makers. A CA who adopts a tool may move many clients onto it, so one practice can be worth many sales.
• Digital signature certificate (DSC) sellers. CAs buy and renew DSCs for directors and clients who file on the MCA and income tax portals.
• Loan agents, NBFCs and banks. CAs prepare the projections and CMA data that business loan files need, and clients ask them which lender to approach.
• Practice tools and office suppliers: document management, client portals, scanners, copiers, furniture and record storage.
• Businesses and NRIs who need a CA in another city, for a GST registration in a new state or the sale of a family property.

When a CA has time to listen

Practising CAs live by the tax calendar, and a pitch made in a deadline week is ignored. Stay away from:

• the return and tax audit season, which runs from about July to October;
• the end of March, when books close for the financial year;
• the days just before the monthly GST return dates.

The week after a big due date is usually calm, and April to June is lighter than the second half of the year. Within a day, call after 5 pm, when clients have left and the partner is reviewing files, or between 10 and 11 am before meetings start. Then:

1. Name the client problem, not your product. "Good evening, sir. We make a tool that matches purchase bills with GSTR-2B. Do you handle GST for traders? It cuts the reconciliation work before each monthly return, and I can show you in ten minutes."
2. Expect questions about client data: where it is stored, who can see it, and whether it can be exported if they leave. A CA's practice rests on confidentiality.
3. Be ready on price per client or per user, on Tally and Excel imports, and on support during deadline weeks.
4. Offer a trial on a few real files, and follow up after the next due date, not before it.

Questions people ask about CA lists

Can I download all chartered accountants from the ICAI website?

No. ICAI's search is for checking one member or firm at a time, and it does not give mobile numbers for outreach. City-wise contact lists come from directories, referrals and data sellers.

Does the list include CAs who work in companies?

Mostly not. Many CAs work in industry as finance managers and CFOs, and they do not appear as practices. To reach them, use a finance heads list such as those in our guide to CEO and senior management lists.

How do I check a CA before hiring one?

Ask for the membership number or the firm's FRN and check it on ICAI's verification page. For a certificate the CA has signed, check its UDIN. The firm's GSTIN can be confirmed on the GST portal; our company search guide shows how.
