What a pharmacy list covers
A pharmacy list in India is mostly a list of independent medical stores: owner-run shops with a drug licence, a registered pharmacist and a distributor's salesman who comes by for orders. The people who search for one are usually distributors opening a new area, brands of over-the-counter products, and companies selling software or equipment to stores. Around the independent shops sit a few other kinds of outlet:
- Chain pharmacies, which buy centrally and decide at head office.
- Hospital pharmacies, run inside or beside a hospital.
- Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which sell generic medicines under the government's Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana.
- 24-hour chemists, usually close to big hospitals.
- Homoeopathic pharmacies and surgical stores, with their own product ranges.
- Wholesale chemists and stockists, often in a city's medicine market, who supply the retailers.
Drug licences: how to tell a chemist is genuine
Nobody can sell medicines in India without a drug licence. The state drug control department issues separate licences for retail and wholesale sale, and a retail store needs a registered pharmacist, enrolled with the state pharmacy council, to dispense medicines. CDSCO regulates drugs nationally, but the shop's licence is a state matter.
- The licence number is usually printed on the store's bills and displayed inside. Some states let you search drug licences online; where they do, you see the firm, the address and the licence status, rarely a phone number.
- GST registration can be checked on the GST portal's taxpayer search. Our company search guide shows how.
- Chemists' associations at district and state level keep a chemists list of their members, mainly for internal use.
- The Jan Aushadhi website has a locator for its kendras, with addresses.
A wholesaler may supply medicines only to licensed buyers, so every distributor keeps a copy of each chemist's licence on file. If you plan to supply medicines yourself, take advice on the licence you need first.

Who needs to reach chemists
- Pharma distributors and stockists adding retailers in a new area, and pharma companies' field teams who call on stores within their company's compliance rules.
- OTC and wellness brands: ORS and electrolyte drinks, baby care, sanitary products, nutrition supplements, glucometers and BP monitors.
- Surgical and medical supplies: bandages, syringes, adult diapers, walking aids.
- Pharmacy software for GST billing, batch and expiry tracking and reordering.
- Store fit-out: racks, medicine refrigerators for insulin and vaccines, signboards and CCTV.
- B2B ordering apps and lenders offering stock credit to retailers.
All of this is business-to-business. A chemist list is for supplying and serving stores, not for promoting prescription medicines to the public.
Visiting and calling medical stores
- Plan a beat. Chemists cluster around hospitals, clinic streets and old city markets. Sort the sheet by PIN code or locality and cover one area a day.
- Pick a quiet hour. Mid-afternoon, roughly 2 pm to 5 pm, is calmer at the counter. Avoid the evening rush after clinics close and the first hour of the day, when deliveries arrive.
- Open with the shelf, not the company. For example: "Namaste, I'm Sameer from an Indore company that makes ORS drinks. Forty stores in Vijay Nagar already stock us through a local distributor. Shall I ask him to drop a trial carton with the launch scheme?"
- Know your terms. Store owners ask about margin and schemes such as "10+1 free", credit days, expiry and breakage returns, minimum order, and whether customers will actually ask for the product.
- Work through the distributor too. Most chemists reorder from their distributor's salesman, so getting stocked by the local distributor matters as much as convincing the store. Our distributors guide covers that side.
For call wording in Hindi and English, see the telecalling scripts, and check the DND rules before calling or sending SMS.
Pharmacy list questions
Does the pharmacy database include email addresses?
51% of the 46,394 medical stores have an email address, and 98% have a mobile number. Chemists answer the phone more readily than email, so plan to call or visit, and use email for price lists and schemes they have asked for.
Can I get only wholesale chemists?
The category column shows the type of store where the source recorded it, such as chemist, medical shop or pharmacy. Wholesale chemists also turn up in distributor lists. For a clean wholesale-only file for one region, request a custom list.
Does the list reach small towns?
The All-India list covers towns as well as cities, so filter by city or PIN code to see what it holds for your district. Separate city lists exist only for the larger cities.
I sell to pharma companies, not stores. Which guide fits?
Read our guide to the list of pharma companies in India, which covers manufacturers, the pharma hubs and who sells to them.
