Distributors, dealers, stockists and wholesalers
People use these words loosely, but they mean different jobs in an Indian supply chain, and the difference decides whom you should call:
- Distributor: buys from the company (or its super stockist) and supplies retailers in a fixed area, usually with salesmen, a godown and delivery vans. FMCG, pharma and electrical brands work this way.
- Super stockist or C&F agent: one level up, supplying distributors across a state or region.
- Dealer: sells a brand's products, often with showroom display and after-sales service. Common for vehicles, machinery, tiles and appliances.
- Wholesaler or trader: buys in bulk from many sources and sells to shops and smaller traders, usually from a wholesale market, with no fixed area.
A brand looking for new markets wants distributors. A manufacturer of components or packaging may want traders and dealers too. A "distributors database" usually holds all of them, so the category column matters more than the label.
Where to find distributors in India
- Wholesale markets. Most cities have a market for each trade, such as electrical goods, hardware, medicines or groceries. A walk through it shows who stocks what.
- Trade associations. Distributors' federations and local traders' associations often publish member lists. Ask for one politely; some charge a small fee.
- B2B portals. Distributors list themselves on online marketplaces to find brands. You will find them product by product, and pay to see more.
- Your competitors' dealer locators. Many brands publish "find a dealer" pages. These distributors already handle your product type, and may want a second line.
- Trade fairs. Distributors visit fairs to find new brands. Good for meetings, though only a few dozen at a time.
- A ready-made list. Names, numbers, cities and categories in one Excel sheet, for when you need hundreds of distributors across many towns.
Whichever route you take, check a distributor's GST registration on the GST portal before you send goods on credit. It shows the legal name, address and whether the registration is active.

What to check in a distributors list
- Mobile numbers, not just landlines. Distributors are rarely at a desk; the owner's mobile is what gets answered.
- The category column. A food distributor will not take on tiles. Sort by category first, then by city.
- Town-level coverage. Brands growing into tier-2 and tier-3 towns need more than the metros. Count the rows for the towns you want.
- A recent build date and real sample rows, so you know what you are paying for. Our checklist for choosing a data provider has ten points.
How brands sign up new distributors
- Pick the area first. Decide which towns you can supply and support, then call distributors only there. A distributor two states away will ask about freight and stock rotation before anything else.
- Open with what they care about. "We make kitchen towels, sell through 400 shops in Pune, and are looking for one distributor in Nashik" earns a second minute. A company profile does not.
- Have the numbers ready. Expect questions on margin, credit days, schemes, damage and expiry returns, minimum order, and whether the area is exclusive.
- Visit the serious ones. See the godown, the delivery vans and the retailers they serve before you appoint anyone.
- Start with a trial order and agree the terms in writing, including the territory and payment terms.
For the calls themselves, our telecalling scripts in Hindi and English and the 7-day calling plan help you get through the list. Before calling, check the DND rules in our DND guide.
Questions people ask
Is a traders database different from a distributors database?
Traders and wholesalers buy and sell from markets without a fixed territory, while distributors supply retailers in an area for particular brands. Many businesses do both, so the two lists overlap. Our Dealers & Traders list has 99,463 traders and dealers for that side of the trade.
Is there an official list of distributors in India?
No. Distributors register for GST like any other business, but there is no public register of who distributes what. Lists come from associations, portals, directories and data providers.
Can I find distributors for a particular product?
Yes. Filter a list by its category column, or start from a product-wise list such as the ones above. Then call a few to confirm what they handle today.
I want to become a distributor. Where do I start?
Read our guide on how to become a distributor. It covers choosing a product, approaching manufacturers and what they will ask you.
