How the Indian pharma industry is organised
A list of pharma companies in India is only useful once you know which kind of company you want. A bulk drug plant in Visakhapatnam and a marketing company in Chandigarh buy completely different things. The main kinds are:
- Formulation makers producing tablets, capsules, syrups, ointments and injections under their own brands.
- Bulk drug (API) makers, who make active ingredients and sell them to formulators in India and abroad.
- Third-party or contract manufacturers, who make products for other companies' brands.
- Marketing and PCD franchise companies, who own brands but no plant and sell through franchisees and distributors district by district.
- Ayurvedic medicine makers, licensed by the state's AYUSH licensing authority, and nutraceutical makers, licensed by FSSAI as food businesses.
Pharma hubs from Baddi to Visakhapatnam
Plants cluster in a few places and head offices in others. Ahmedabad and Vadodara hold formulation and API plants. Hyderabad is known for bulk drugs. Baddi in Himachal Pradesh is dense with formulation and third-party plants, and Sikkim and Goa host plants of several large companies. Visakhapatnam has a large pharma industrial area, mostly for APIs. Mumbai and Thane hold head offices, export desks and marketing teams.
So decide whether you need the plant or the head office. Packaging, spares and consumables are usually bought at the plant; brand, contract and large capital decisions are often made at head office.
Official sources for a list of pharma companies in India
- State drug control departments issue manufacturing licences, and some publish lists of licensed manufacturers. Format and detail vary from state to state.
- CDSCO regulates drugs nationally: approvals, imports and the rules plants must follow. Its website is for notices and approvals, not a directory.
- Pharmexcil, the export promotion council for pharma, keeps a directory of its member exporters.
- The MCA portal gives free master data for any company: CIN, status, registered office and directors.
- Drug manufacturers' associations publish member lists, sometimes only to members.
None of these hands you a pharmaceutical companies list with phone numbers, email addresses and the names of the people who buy. They confirm that a company exists and holds a licence; finding the right person is still up to you.

Who sells to pharmaceutical companies
- Raw materials: API and excipient traders, solvent suppliers, empty capsule shells.
- Packaging: blister foil and PVC film, HDPE bottles, glass vials, printed cartons and leaflets.
- Machinery and engineering: tablet presses, capsule fillers, blister packing lines, cleanroom panels, HVAC and purified water systems.
- Quality and compliance: HPLC and dissolution testers, calibration and validation services, and GMP consultants helping plants with the revised Schedule M rules.
- Contract manufacturers looking for marketing companies to make for.
- People and field tools: recruiters, MR training institutes and sales-force apps.
Getting through to the right department
- Name the department before you call. Purchase buys packaging and raw materials; QA and QC choose instruments and testing; engineering picks machines and spares; regulatory affairs hires consultants.
- Call purchase mid-morning on a weekday. Avoid month-end, when orders and payments are being closed, and audit weeks, when QA has time for nobody.
- Lead with proof. For example: "Good morning. I'm Neha from a Vapi company that makes Alu-Alu blister foil, and we already supply formulation plants in Baddi. Who approves new packaging vendors at your Baddi unit, and may I send samples for testing?"
- Expect a long approval. Buyers ask for samples, a certificate of analysis with every batch, your quality certificates, and often an audit of your site before the first order. It can take months, but once you are approved, replacing you also needs a new approval, so the business tends to stay.
- Stay in touch with both purchase and QA, because either can block a change of supplier.
Our guides on vendor registration and reaching purchase managers cover the paperwork and the follow-up.
Questions about pharma company data
How do I check a pharma company's licence?
Ask for the drug manufacturing licence number and check it with the state drug control department that issued it. For the company itself, MCA master data and the GST taxpayer search confirm the legal name, status and address; our company search guide walks through both.
Is a pharma list the same as a chemicals list?
No. Chemical makers sell to pharma among many other industries. If you sell solvents, drums or reactors, start with our guide to the list of chemical companies in India.
