What a list of companies in Chennai takes in

A list of companies in Chennai looks different depending on who asks. A job seeker pictures the IT offices on OMR. A supplier of gaskets, cartons or forklifts thinks of the factory belts to the west and north, and a distributor thinks of the wholesale lanes of George Town. The city has all of these:

  • Automobiles and electronics: car, truck and motorcycle plants around Sriperumbudur, Irungattukottai, Oragadam and Mahindra World City near Chengalpattu, among them Hyundai, Renault, Daimler's BharatBenz, Royal Enfield and BMW, plus phone and electronics assembly at Sriperumbudur. Long chains of component makers feed them.
  • Older engineering and heavy industry: the Ambattur and Guindy industrial estates, the Integral Coach Factory at Perambur, Ashok Leyland at Ennore, the refinery and petrochemical units of Manali, and the ports at Chennai and Ennore.
  • IT and back offices: Old Mahabalipuram Road from TIDEL Park at Taramani through Sholinganallur to the SIPCOT IT park at Siruseri, plus Guindy, Porur and Ambattur.
  • Leather, garments and trade through the port: leather and footwear firms in the city, with further clusters at Ranipet, Ambur and Vaniyambadi to the west, and the exporters and importers who ship through Chennai.
  • Markets and services: George Town and Sowcarpet for wholesale, Ritchie Street for electronics, T. Nagar for silk, textiles and jewellery, Koyambedu for produce, Kodambakkam for the Tamil film trade, and hospitals that draw patients from across India and abroad.

Choose your slice before you look for data. A tyre-moulding supplier needs Oragadam; a stationery wholesaler needs Parrys.

Where free Chennai data falls short

  • MCA master data answers one question at a time: is this company or LLP active, where is its registered office, who are its directors. The partnership firms and proprietors of Sowcarpet sit outside it.
  • SIPCOT and SIDCO publish their parks and estates: SIPCOT at Sriperumbudur, Irungattukottai, Oragadam and Gummidipoondi, SIDCO at Guindy, Ambattur and Thirumazhisai. That is a map of where units are, not a contact list.
  • The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry, CII's southern regional office and the many trade associations of George Town know their members, but rarely share details outside membership.
  • District Industries Centres handle MSME schemes. Most factories near Chennai fall in Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts, each with its own centre, so ask the right one.
  • Old "Chennai industries list" files and printed directories are still passed around. Check the date on them: many were compiled a decade or more ago.

Businesses that buy Chennai data

  • Rubber, plastics, packaging, fastener and logistics suppliers for the auto and electronics plants along the Bengaluru highway.
  • Freight forwarders, customs brokers, container yards and export packers who work with exporters and importers. Our exporters and importers guide explains that side of the trade.
  • Office supplies, housekeeping, security and staff transport contractors for the IT parks on OMR.
  • Brands and distributors looking for wholesalers in George Town and retailers in T. Nagar and the suburbs.
  • Medical equipment and consumables dealers for the city's hospitals and clinics.

Reaching Chennai businesses

  1. Treat it as three cities. The factory belt (Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, Ambattur, Gummidipoondi), the offices on OMR and the old trading core around Parrys need separate days and separate pitches.
  2. Tamil first, English close behind. Most owners warm to a Tamil greeting and are comfortable in English. In Sowcarpet many traders come from Marwari and Gujarati families and talk business in Hindi. An opening for a plant: "Good morning, Priya here from a corrugated box maker in Ambattur. We supply cartons to two component firms in Oragadam. Who handles packaging purchase at your plant?"
  3. Start early. Chennai tends to begin its working day early, so a call at half past nine often finds the owner at the desk.
  4. Respect the calendar. Some traditional owners avoid starting new deals during rahu kalam, the daily inauspicious slot printed in Tamil calendars; if an owner suggests another time, that may be why. Many firms close for a few days at Pongal in January, and the northeast monsoon from October to December can flood roads for days.
  5. Stay within the rules. Check the DND register rules before calls or SMS, and set up email as our cold email guide describes.

Your Chennai questions

Where are the car and electronics factories near Chennai?

West and south-west of the city along the Bengaluru highway, in the SIPCOT parks at Sriperumbudur, Irungattukottai and Oragadam, at Mahindra World City near Chengalpattu, and north at Gummidipoondi. Many sit in neighbouring districts rather than Chennai itself, so also look at the Tamil Nadu lists.

Which areas of Chennai have the most offices?

Head offices and banks gather along Anna Salai (Mount Road), in Nungambakkam and in Guindy. Newer tech and services offices fill OMR, Porur and the IT parks of Ambattur.
