Where contractors are listed, what a contractors list contains, and who sells to them.

Who is on a contractors list

A contractors list in India covers firms and individuals who build, fit out or repair for someone else, from a two-person painting contractor in Thane to a turnkey firm putting up factory sheds in Chakan. Sort them by the work they do, because each kind buys different things:

  • Civil and building contractors: houses, apartment blocks, commercial buildings and factory sheds, working for builders or straight for owners.
  • Turnkey and design-and-build firms: take a project from drawings to handover and buy almost everything that goes into it.
  • Electrical contractors: wiring, panels, substations and lighting for buildings and plants.
  • Plumbing and sanitation contractors: water supply, drainage, fire lines and bathroom fittings.
  • Interior and fit-out contractors: offices, shops, showrooms and homes, from false ceilings to modular furniture.
  • Specialists: waterproofing, painting, flooring, fabrication, air conditioning and road works.

Many civil engineers work as consultants rather than contractors, designing structures or supervising sites. A good list keeps both and says which is which.

Registrations, tenders and what they leave out

Contractors who work for government register with the departments they bid to:

  • State PWD registration. Public works departments register contractors in classes, which set the size of contract each may bid for. The classes and rules differ from state to state.
  • CPWD enlistment. The Central Public Works Department enlists contractors by category of work, such as civil or electrical, and by class.
  • Other departments. The railways, the Military Engineer Services, water boards and municipal bodies keep their own lists of approved contractors.
  • Electrical licences. Electrical contractors need a licence for electrical work from their state's licensing board or electrical inspectorate.
  • Tender results. The Central Public Procurement Portal and the state e-procurement sites publish tenders, and many also show who won them.

Some departments publish their registered contractors online. Those lists help you check a firm, but they rarely carry phone numbers, can be years old, and leave out the private side of the trade: contractors who work only for builders, factories, shops and homeowners. Local builders' and contractors' associations know that side well, though their member books stay with members.

Our contractors database by city and trade

Our Civil Engineers & Contractors list has 2,80,449 contractors and civil engineers in 487 cities. 91% have a mobile number and 90% an email address; 64% give a contact person's name. Each row says what kind of work the firm does, so you can keep only electrical or waterproofing contractors, for example. Few rows carry a PIN code, so plan by city and area name rather than by PIN. The list is also sold for 64 cities and 21 states.

By type of work

Narrower lists split the trade by what the contractor does:

Electricians, plumbers and the shops contractors buy from

Electricians and plumbers have lists of their own, and if you sell through dealers rather than to contractors directly, the building materials list covers the hardware and material shops on the other side of the counter. The All-India lists:

Who sells to contractors

  • Material suppliers: cement, TMT bars, ready-mix concrete, blocks and bricks, sand and aggregate, tiles, pipes and cables.
  • Rental firms: shuttering, scaffolding, props, concrete mixers and earth-moving machines by the day or month.
  • Chemical brands: waterproofing, admixtures, tile adhesives and sealants, often sold through applicators who are themselves contractors.
  • Electrical and plumbing distributors after project orders bigger than their counter sales.
  • Safety and site supplies: helmets, safety belts, nets, site lighting and portable cabins.
  • Finance and insurance: equipment loans, bank guarantees for tenders and contractor's all-risk policies.
  • Software and services: estimating and billing software, site attendance apps, structural design and soil testing.
  • Architects and builders looking for dependable contractors for the next project. Our guides to the architects list and to builders and real estate agents cover the people who hire contractors.

Calling contractors between site visits

  1. Leave the morning to the site. Most contractors spend it checking work and labour. Call between 1 and 2 pm, when many stop for lunch, or after 5 pm, when many are back at the office.
  2. Open with a project, not a product. For example: "Namaste sir, I'm Ravi from Sai Shuttering Rentals in Wakad. We rent aluminium shuttering and props by the month and deliver anywhere in Pimpri-Chinchwad within a day. Do you have a slab coming up in the next few weeks?"
  3. Talk rates, not features. Contractors work on fixed rates and thin margins, so expect questions on the rate per bag, tonne, square foot or month, delivery and unloading at site, credit days, the GST invoice, and how fast you replace anything faulty.
  4. Ask about the work ahead. Which sites are running, which start next month, and who chooses the materials on each: the contractor, the builder or the owner's architect.
  5. Go to the site. A short visit with a sample or a rate card does more than a brochure, and shows you how big the contractor really is.

Contractor list questions

Where can I get a civil contractors list for my state?

For government-registered contractors, start with your state PWD's website, which may publish registered contractors by class. For private contractors with phone numbers, our list is sold for 21 states as well as cities; check the sample rows for your area first.

Do contractors buy the materials themselves?

It depends on the contract. In a labour-only contract the owner or builder buys the materials and the contractor supplies the workers. In item-rate and turnkey contracts the contractor buys most of them, which makes the contractor the customer to call, so ask early in the conversation.

Is there a separate electrical contractors list?

Yes: the Electrical Contractors list has 2,358 of them. You can also filter the category column of the main list for electrical work. Before you hand a contractor a large job, ask for the state licence number.
