Where to get the NBFC list in India
The official NBFC list in India comes from the Reserve Bank of India. A non-banking financial company needs a Certificate of Registration (CoR) from RBI before it can carry on the business of a financial institution, and RBI's website publishes the registered companies as downloadable lists, sorted by category. Each row gives the company's name, its registration number and its registered address. RBI also publishes:
- the NBFCs allowed to accept public deposits, a small part of the total;
- the companies whose registration has been cancelled, worth checking before you sign any agreement;
- the NBFCs placed in the upper layer of its scale-based rules, the largest and most closely watched lenders;
- separate lists for categories such as microfinance institutions, factoring companies, core investment companies, account aggregators and peer-to-peer lending platforms.
These registers answer one question: is this company registered? They are not built for sales. The address is the registered office, which may not be where the lending happens, and there are no mobile numbers, no names of people and no branch details. To sell to NBFCs, or to sign up as their agent, you need someone who decides: the founder, the business head, the credit or collections head, or a branch manager.
Kinds of NBFCs, and what each one does
"NBFC" covers lenders of very different shapes. The ones a seller meets most often:
- Investment and credit companies (NBFC-ICC), the largest group. They make vehicle and tractor loans, gold loans, business loans to small firms, personal and consumer durable loans, and loans against property. Kerala is home to several of the country's large gold loan companies.
- Microfinance institutions (NBFC-MFI), lending small amounts to low-income households, often to women in groups, through field staff who collect in person.
- Housing finance companies, now regulated by RBI, while the National Housing Bank continues to supervise them.
- Infrastructure finance companies and infrastructure debt funds, lending to roads, power and other long projects.
- Core investment companies and investment companies that mainly hold shares in group companies and lend little to the public.
- Factoring companies, peer-to-peer platforms and account aggregators, each a category with its own RBI rules.
Since October 2022 RBI has sorted NBFCs into layers by size and risk (base, middle, upper and top), with stricter rules higher up. For a seller this is a rough guide to budget: a base-layer lender with a few branches buys very differently from an upper-layer company with hundreds.

Who sells to NBFCs
- Lending technology: loan origination and loan management systems, credit decision engines, apps for field staff, and collection software.
- Data and verification: reports from the four credit bureaus, e-KYC and video KYC, bank statement analysis through account aggregators, and e-NACH mandates for EMI collection.
- Field agencies: recovery agencies, residence and business verification agencies, property valuers and, for gold loan companies, gold valuers and purity testing machines.
- Loan sourcing: DSAs (direct selling agents) and connectors who bring loan files for a payout, and fintech platforms that originate loans for a partner NBFC under RBI's digital lending rules.
- Compliance and audit: CA firms for statutory and internal audits (our chartered accountants list guide covers them), company secretaries, IT and cyber security auditors, and lawyers for cheque bounce and arbitration cases.
- Branch and office needs: branch fit-outs, strong rooms and safes, CCTV and alarm monitoring, printing of loan documents, and backup internet.
Money flows the other way too. A DSA or a fintech startup is often looking for an NBFC to fund the loans it sources. The pitch is then about the borrowers you can bring and how well they repay, not about a product.
How to approach an NBFC
- Find the right desk. Collection agencies talk to the collections head, software firms to the CTO or COO, DSAs to the business head of the loan product they source. In a small NBFC the founder decides almost everything.
- Know their product and region. A gold loan company with branches in Kerala and a microfinance lender in Bihar need different things. The company's website, its RBI category and its directors on the MCA portal tell you a lot; our CIN and DIN search guide shows how to look them up.
- Open with their problem. For example: "Good morning, sir. I'm calling from a Pune agency that does residence and business verification for lenders in western Maharashtra, with reports in 48 hours. You have branches in Nashik and Aurangabad; who handles verification there today?"
- Expect due diligence. RBI holds lenders responsible for the work they outsource, so a serious NBFC will ask for your registration papers, references and data security practices and, for recovery work, how your agents are trained and supervised. RBI's rules bar recovery agents from harassing borrowers or calling them before 8 am or after 7 pm.
- Time it. Collection teams are busiest around the main EMI dates early in the month, and accounts teams at each quarter-end. Mid-month afternoons are usually calmer.
Sales calls to company numbers still fall under TRAI's commercial communication rules, so read our DND check guide before you dial, and give your team a telecalling script to work from.
Questions people ask
How do I check whether an NBFC is registered with RBI?
Search the company's name in RBI's list of registered NBFCs, and look at the list of cancelled registrations too. Ask for the CoR number and check the company's CIN and directors on the MCA portal. A lending app should name the regulated lender behind each loan; if it does not, be careful.
What is the difference between an NBFC and a bank?
An NBFC cannot accept demand deposits such as savings or current accounts, cannot issue cheques drawn on itself, and deposits placed with it, where it may take them, are not covered by the deposit insurance that protects bank depositors. It lends and invests much like a bank, under rules that grow stricter with its size.
Does a loan DSA need RBI registration?
No. A DSA is an agent appointed by a bank or NBFC under an agreement, not a lender. The lender stays responsible for the DSA's conduct, which is why lenders check DSAs before they empanel them.
Can I get a list of NBFC borrowers or loan customers?
No. Starleads sells business contact lists only: the lenders themselves, not the people who borrow from them. Borrower data belongs to the lender and is protected by law.
