Cement companies in India, and where they make cement
India's cement comes from a fairly small group of large makers and a longer tail of regional ones. Names most buyers know include UltraTech Cement of the Aditya Birla group, Ambuja Cements and ACC of the Adani group, Shree Cement, Dalmia Bharat, JK Cement, JK Lakshmi Cement, The Ramco Cements, Nuvoco Vistas, Birla Corporation and Star Cement. Each state also has regional brands that sell mostly within a few hundred kilometres of their plants, because cement is heavy and freight eats into the margin.
Plants sit where the limestone is. Well-known cement belts include Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, Satna in Madhya Pradesh, Chandrapur in Maharashtra, Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Nalgonda in Telangana and Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu, with more in Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and the North-East. Many companies also run grinding units nearer the big cities, where clinker from the mines is ground and blended with fly ash or slag.
If you need the makers, their annual reports and the Cement Manufacturers' Association are the places to start. If you need the people who sell cement bag by bag, that is the cement dealers list Starleads sells, by city and state.
From plant to site: how cement is sold
The trade splits cement sales into two kinds:
- Trade sales go through dealers. The company or its carrying and forwarding agent supplies dealers, who sell to sub-dealers, retailers, masons, small contractors and families building their own homes. Most bags sold in towns and villages move this way.
- Non-trade sales go direct, in bulk, to builders, infrastructure contractors, ready-mix concrete plants and government projects, usually at negotiated rates.
A cement dealer is rarely only a cement dealer. Many also sell TMT bars, sand, aggregates, bricks or AAC blocks, waterproofing and pipes. Dealers carry one or two main brands and earn on volume schemes, so they watch rates every week. The mason's opinion counts: on small sites he often picks the brand, which is why companies run mason meets and training.
Cement is under compulsory BIS certification, so every bag must carry the ISI mark and the standard it is made to: IS 269 for ordinary Portland cement (OPC, sold in grades such as 43 and 53), IS 1489 for Portland pozzolana cement (PPC) and IS 455 for Portland slag cement. Buyers check the grade, the type and the week of packing printed on the bag, since cement loses strength in storage. The BIS Care app verifies a licence number. For research and testing, the National Council for Cement and Building Materials works with the industry.

Who sells to cement dealers
- Cement companies appointing dealers in new territories or replacing ones that have switched brands. Our guide on how to get a dealership covers what they ask for.
- TMT bar makers and steel distributors, since the same counter sells both. The steel guide covers that trade.
- Construction chemical and allied brands: waterproofing, wall putty, tile adhesive, AAC blocks, pipes and roofing sheets.
- Transporters with trucks for plant-to-godown and godown-to-site runs.
- Lenders and software firms: working capital and dealer finance, and billing, stock and credit-tracking software.
- Buyers: contractors and builders wanting a second quote, who also appear in our contractors list guide.

Calling a cement dealer
- Pick the hour. Mornings go on loading trucks and taking orders from sites. Early afternoon is usually quieter.
- Talk rate and margin, not brochures. Dealers compare everything to the rate per bag and the scheme on their main brand.
- Lead with something that adds to the counter. For example: "Good afternoon, I'm calling from a waterproofing company in Hyderabad. Most cement dealers we work with sell our product to the same masons who buy cement from them, with delivery from our Medchal depot in two days. Do you sell any waterproofing now?"
- Expect questions about credit days, minimum order, who pays freight, returns, and whether you will hold a mason meet in their area.
- Follow up in season. Building slows in the monsoon in most of India, so time follow-ups for the months before and after it.

Questions people ask
How many cement companies are there in India?
The number depends on how you count plants, grinding units and brands, and it changes with mergers. The Cement Manufacturers' Association and the companies' own reports are the better sources for a current count. For selling, the dealer count matters more: our file has 8,108.
Is a cement dealer the same as a cement distributor?
Often the words are used for the same business. Where both exist, the distributor or stockist buys from the company in bulk and supplies smaller dealers and retailers, who sell to builders and masons.
Can I get cement dealers in one district only?
Use the state list and filter the city and pin code columns, or combine towns in the list builder. If a district is missing, ask for a custom list.
