How India's steel trade is layered

Anyone asking for a steel manufacturers list usually has one layer of the trade in mind, and the layers behave very differently as customers:

  • Integrated plants. A handful of large producers make steel from iron ore: SAIL at Bhilai, Rourkela, Durgapur and Bokaro, Tata Steel at Jamshedpur, JSW Steel at Vijayanagar near Ballari, and a few others. They sell through appointed distributors and buy through tenders and vendor portals.
  • Secondary producers. Induction furnaces, sponge iron plants and rolling mills that turn out billets, TMT bars, angles and channels. Raipur, Mandi Gobindgarh and Jalna are well-known centres, and most states have smaller clusters.
  • Stockists and distributors. Dealers of the big plants and independent stockists holding sheets, plates, pipes and bars in their yards.
  • Traders and merchants. Steel markets such as the one at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai, and iron merchants in every district town.
  • Processors and fabricators. Slitting and cut-to-length centres, pipe makers, sheet metal shops, stainless steel utensil makers and structural fabricators.

You already know the names in the first layer. The other four are far more numerous and mostly owner-run, and that is where a contact list earns its keep.

Where to look up steel makers and traders

  • BIS licences. TMT bars and many other steel products may only be sold with the BIS standard mark under quality control orders. The BIS Care app lets you verify a licence number printed on a product, and the BIS website lists which products are covered today.
  • GST and MCA. The GST portal confirms a trader's legal name, address and whether the registration is active; MCA master data shows a company's directors and registered office. Steel deals involve large sums on thin margins, so check both before you extend credit.
  • EEPC India. The engineering export promotion council represents exporters of engineering goods, including many steel products. Its members are the export-facing end of the trade.
  • Local associations. Steel traders' and re-rolling mills' associations in towns such as Mandi Gobindgarh and Raipur often keep member lists. Ask in person; they are rarely online.

None of these sorts firms by product and town with a mobile number. For a closer check on one firm before a big order, see our company search guide.

What is in our steel manufacturers list

The Steel, Metals & Minerals list has 1,47,650 firms across 546 cities and towns: makers, rolling mills, stockists, merchants, fabricators and scrap dealers together. So it is more than a list of steel manufacturers in India, and the category column is how you narrow it (91% of rows have one). 87% have a mobile number, 83% an email address and 83% a named contact. Categories come from how firms describe themselves, so a few rows will be off-topic; the free sample shows you the mix before you pay.

Steel and metal firms by city

The biggest of 47 city lists; there are 20 state lists as well:

The specialisation lists split the trade by what each firm handles. Pick the one closest to your product:

Who buys a steel and metals list

  • Raw material sellers: scrap dealers, sponge iron and ferro alloy suppliers, and coal and coke traders selling to furnaces and mills.
  • Plant suppliers: refractories, rolls, cranes and hoists, weighbridges, industrial gases for cutting, and rolling mill machinery.
  • Service firms: laser and plasma cutting job work, galvanising and powder coating, testing labs, and fleet owners with trailers for long products. Our transporters and logistics guide covers that side of the trade.
  • Buyers of steel: builders, contractors and fabricators who want more than one quote for TMT, plates or pipes, and the factories in our manufacturing companies guide.
  • Software and finance: billing and stock software for steel traders, and lenders offering working capital to firms that carry stock.

Talking to steel people: rates first

  1. Know the grade and the section. Steel buyers think in grades and sizes: Fe 500D for TMT bars, IS 2062 for structural steel, 304 or 202 for stainless. Ask what they handle before you quote anything.
  2. Lead with a rate or a service, not a profile. For example: "We do laser cutting of MS and SS sheets in Faridabad and turn drawings round in a day. Do you send out any cutting work at the moment?"
  3. Call after the morning rush. Traders spend the first hours of the day on rates, orders and loading. Late morning to early afternoon is usually calmer.
  4. Expect hard questions: rate per tonne delivered, advance or credit days, mill test certificates, who arranges the truck, and how fast you can supply. Prices move with the market, so say how long your quote holds.
  5. Send a short rate sheet when they ask for one, and follow up on WhatsApp only once they have agreed to it.

Our 7-day calling plan shows how to work through a few hundred numbers without losing track.

Short answers on steel lists

Does the list show capacity or turnover?

No. It has names, contact details, city and category. For a company's size, look at its filings on the MCA portal, or simply ask during the first call.

Can I get only stainless steel firms?

Filter the category column for stainless steel, or use a stainless steel specialisation list if one appears above. To combine several cities in one file, use the list builder.

Whom should I ask for at a rolling mill?

In most mills, the owner or a partner. In larger plants the purchase manager buys consumables and the works or maintenance manager decides on spares and services.
