Paint companies in India: manufacturers and dealers list

The paint makers, how paint is sold through dealers and contractors, and a dealers list by city.

The paint companies in India, and the trade beneath them

Someone searching for paint companies in India usually wants one of two things: the names of the makers, or the shops and contractors who sell and apply their paint. The makers are well known. Decorative paint for homes and offices comes mainly from national brands such as Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Nippon Paint, Indigo Paints, JSW Paints, Shalimar Paints and Birla Opus, the Aditya Birla group's paint business. Alongside them, hundreds of regional and small makers sell distempers, enamels, primers and putty under their own names, often in only one or two states.

Industrial paint is a separate market: automotive finishes, powder coatings, protective coatings for steel and pipelines, and road-marking and marine paints. These are mostly sold direct to factories, fabricators and contractors rather than through shops.

A list of the big makers fits on one line. The list most businesses actually need is the one underneath it: the paint dealers, hardware shops and painting contractors in every town, who decide which tin leaves the shelf. That is the list Starleads sells, by city and state.

How paint gets from the factory to the wall

A tin of decorative paint usually passes through four hands:

  1. The company and its depots. Brands run regional depots and sales teams that look after dealers in each territory.
  2. The dealer. Most paint is now coloured in the shop. Brands place tinting machines with their dealers, which mix a chosen shade from a base paint and colourants on the spot. A dealer usually pushes one or two main brands, often the ones whose machines it has, and keeps others for customers who ask by name.
  3. The painter or painting contractor. On repainting jobs the painter often chooses the brand, or narrows the choice to two. That is why brands run reward and loyalty schemes for painters, and why a dealer's painter network matters as much as its shelf.
  4. The owner, builder or housing society. Home owners pick shades; builders and housing societies hire contractors for whole buildings and buy on rate.

Two rules shape the product. Since 2016, regulations under the Environment (Protection) Act have capped lead in household and decorative paints at 90 parts per million, so a reputable maker can say its paints comply. And BIS has standards for many types of paint; government and PSU tenders usually name the BIS specification a paint must meet. The Indian Paint Association represents makers, but neither it nor any public register lists dealers with phone numbers.

Our paint dealers and painting contractors list

The Paint Dealers & Painting Contractors list has 15,662 businesses in 217 cities and towns: paint shops, multi-brand dealers, painting contractors, and some makers and raw material suppliers who list themselves under paint. 86% have a mobile number, 35% an email address and 91% a shop address. 56% name the owner or a contact person. Shops close, move and change numbers, so no list stays complete for long; the free sample shows you the rows before you pay.

Who sells to paint dealers and painters

  • Paint brands looking for dealers. Newer and regional brands need shops and tinting points in towns they do not cover yet, and established ones fill gaps in their maps. Our guide on how to get a dealership shows the same deal from the dealer's side.
  • Makers of allied products: wall putty, primers, waterproofing coatings, construction chemicals, wood finishes and tile adhesives, all sold across the same counter.
  • Tools and consumables: brushes, rollers, spray machines, sandpaper and abrasives, masking tape, ladders and scaffolding.
  • Raw material suppliers to small paint makers: resins, pigments, titanium dioxide, solvents, additives and tins.
  • Services: billing and stock software for shops, working capital lenders, and transporters running depot-to-dealer routes.
  • Buyers of painting work: builders, housing societies and facility managers who want quotes from painting contractors.

Paint dealers often sell cement, plywood and tiles too, or sit next door to shops that do. The cement dealers guide and the plywood and laminate guide cover those counters.

Calling a paint shop

  1. Avoid the morning rush. Painters collect material early before heading to site, so the counter is busy. Late morning or mid-afternoon finds the owner freer.
  2. Know which brands the shop carries. The board outside usually tells you. A shop tied to one brand's tinting machine will listen differently from a multi-brand dealer.
  3. Open with what moves stock. For example: "Namaste, I'm calling from a waterproofing company in Ahmedabad. Our terrace coating sells through paint dealers, and we run a free demo for your painters. Do you stock any waterproofing products at the moment?"
  4. Be ready for the dealer's questions: margin and schemes, credit days, whether unsold stock can be returned, who supplies and how fast, and whether painters already ask for your product.
  5. Win the painters as well. A demo or a small reward for painters who use your product often does more than a discount to the shop.

Before a calling campaign, read our DND check guide: a dealer's mobile on the DND register is protected like any other number. Move to WhatsApp only after the dealer agrees to it. For call structure and objections, see our cold calling tips.

Questions people ask

Does the list include paint manufacturers?

Some, where makers list themselves under paint, but it is mainly dealers and contractors. Makers of industrial coatings and paint raw materials are also in our chemical companies guide.

Can I get only painting contractors?

Yes. Use the painting contractors specialisation list if it appears above, or filter the category column in the full file. To mix several cities in one file, use the list builder.

Which is the biggest paint company in India?

Market shares change and the companies publish their own figures in annual reports, so check the latest reports rather than any ranking on a website. For selling to the trade, what matters more is which brands are strong in your town, and the dealers will tell you that on the first call.

What should I check in a paint dealers list?

The category of each row, so you do not call a hardware shop with a painter pitch; the city and pin code, so one salesperson can own one area; and whether the number is a mobile. In our file 86% of rows have one.
