Plywood companies in India and where plywood is made

Plywood in India comes from a handful of national brands and a very large number of regional factories. The brands most buyers know include Century Plyboards (CenturyPly), Greenply Industries, Kitply, Archidply and Duroply, with Greenpanel and others making MDF and other boards. In decorative laminates the familiar names include Greenlam, Merino, Royale Touche and Stylam.

Behind the brands are the clusters, and three stand out:

  • Yamunanagar, Haryana, with neighbouring Jagadhri, is the best known plywood and veneer hub in North India. Its factories peel poplar and eucalyptus grown by farmers across Haryana, Punjab and western Uttar Pradesh.
  • Perumbavoor, Kerala, in Ernakulam district, has a dense belt of plywood units using rubberwood and other local timber.
  • Gandhidham, Gujarat, near Kandla port, has units working with imported timber.

Many smaller factories in these hubs supply sheets that are sold under dealers' or other companies' brand names. So the makers are only half of what most people want. The other half, and the half Starleads sells, is the plywood and laminate dealers list: the shops in every city that sell boards, laminates and hardware to carpenters, interior designers and home owners.

The grades and standards buyers ask about

Plywood is bought on grade, and BIS standards set the grades:

StandardWhat it coversWhere it is used
IS 303General-purpose plywood, in grades such as MR (moisture resistant) and BWR (boiling water resistant)Wardrobes, beds, interior furniture; BWR where there is some moisture
IS 710Marine plywood, which the trade often sells as BWPKitchens, bathroom vanities, wet areas

Separate standards cover fire-retardant plywood, flush doors and boards such as MDF and particle board. A genuine ISI-marked sheet carries the standard and a licence number, which a buyer can check in the BIS Care app. The Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute (IPIRTI) in Bengaluru tests plywood and panel products, and its reports come up when large buyers compare suppliers.

Beyond the standard, dealers and designers ask about the core timber, the face veneer, thickness tolerance and calibration for modular furniture, termite and borer treatment, and formaldehyde emission (E1 or E0). Brands also sell newer boards such as HDHMR and pre-laminated particle board for factory-made furniture.

Furniture makers and interior designers

Plywood is bought for furniture and interiors, so these lists reach the people who use it:

Who sells to plywood dealers

  • Plywood and board makers in Yamunanagar, Perumbavoor and Gandhidham looking for dealers in new states, and brands filling gaps in their networks. See how to get a dealership for the dealer's side.
  • Laminate, veneer and edge-band makers, since dealers sell these with every board.
  • Furniture hardware brands: hinges, drawer channels, handles, locks and kitchen fittings.
  • Adhesive makers and sellers of wood polish, PU and other finishes.
  • Machinery sellers offering panel saws and edge-banding machines to dealers who cut to size, and to the furniture workshops they supply.
  • Transporters, lenders and software firms serving dealers who carry heavy stock on credit.

The carpenter matters as much as the dealer. On most home jobs he suggests the brand and the grade, which is why plywood and hardware brands run loyalty schemes for carpenters. The architects list guide covers the designers who specify boards, and the contractors guide covers the firms that fit out offices and shops.

Calling plywood dealers

  1. Call after the morning dispatch. Carpenters and contractors pick up sheets early, and the owner is often on the godown floor. Late morning or after lunch works better.
  2. Know the grade and price band you are selling. A dealer selling mostly MR grade to budget builders needs a different pitch from one selling marine ply to interior designers.
  3. Open with the sheet, the grade and the delivery. For example: "Namaste, I'm calling from a plywood factory in Yamunanagar. We make BWR and marine plywood to IS 303 and IS 710, calibrated for modular furniture, and we deliver to Pune in about five days. Which grades sell most at your shop?"
  4. Be ready for questions on rate per square foot, thickness tolerance, warranty, credit days, minimum order, and support for carpenters such as meets and rewards.
  5. Send test reports and a sample piece before the second call.

Check the DND rules before calling, and see the cold calling tips for handling objections.

Questions people ask

Which is the biggest plywood company in India?

The listed companies publish their sales in annual reports, and much of the market is unbranded, so rankings found online are unreliable. For selling into the trade, ask dealers which brands move in their town.

Is BWR plywood the same as marine plywood?

No. BWR is a grade under IS 303 for general-purpose plywood. Marine plywood is made to IS 710 for heavier exposure to water. Ask for the standard printed on the sheet.

Can I get laminate dealers only?

Filter the category column, or use the specialisation lists above where they exist. Many shops sell both plywood and laminates, so most rows will show both. To combine cities, use the list builder.
