Indore's economy: wholesale trade, Pithampur and the Super Corridor

Indore is the commercial centre of Madhya Pradesh, and a list of companies in Indore mixes three quite different worlds: old wholesale markets that supply towns across Malwa, factories in and around the city, and a newer layer of IT firms and institutes. People looking for jobs mostly ask about the IT campuses and the auto plants. Sellers do better to start with the traders and the small and mid-sized manufacturers:

Wholesale and distribution: Siyaganj for groceries and dry goods, the MT Cloth Market for fabric, Sarafa for jewellery, and the busy lanes around Rajwada. Many traders here are stockists for national brands.
Pithampur: the auto and pharma cluster just south-west of the city, in Dhar district, with Force Motors and Eicher's commercial vehicle plants, component makers, pharma units and a special economic zone.
Food processing: soybean processors (their national body, SOPA, is based in Indore), flour and dal mills, spice packers, and the namkeen and snack makers the city is famous for.
The city's own industrial areas: Sanwer Road, Polo Ground and Laxmibai Nagar, home to engineering, plastics, printing and packaging units.
IT and education: TCS and Infosys campuses on the Super Corridor, Crystal IT Park, IIM Indore and IIT Indore, and the coaching institutes around Bhawarkuan.
Services: hospitals, clinics, showrooms and offices along AB Road and in Vijay Nagar and Palasia.

Where free company information in Indore runs out

MCA master data works for companies and LLPs if you already know the name. The Siyaganj trader or the namkeen maker running a proprietorship is not there.
MPIDC (Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation) manages the industrial areas around Indore, Pithampur included, and publishes their land details. It does not publish who occupies each plot with a phone number.
AIMP (Association of Industries Madhya Pradesh) is Indore-based and knows the region's manufacturers. Pithampur has its own industries association, and SOPA covers the soybean trade. Their lists rarely leave the office.
The district industries centre is where small units get help with Udyam and state incentives; useful for checking a small unit, not for building a list.

Getting answers from Indore businesses

Separate the three Indores. Old-city trade around Rajwada, Siyaganj and the cloth market; the newer commercial belt of Vijay Nagar, Palasia and AB Road; and industry at Sanwer Road, Polo Ground and out at Pithampur and Dewas.
Keep it in Hindi and keep it friendly. Indore's business talk is Hindi with a warm, informal "bhiya" tone. Managers in IT and pharma will happily switch to English. Try: "Namaste bhiya, hum Pithampur ke units ko cutting tools supply karte hain, stock Indore mein hai. Purchase kaun dekhta hai?"
Call traders soon after they open. In the first hour the owner is usually at the counter and the market is still quiet; later the same call competes with customers.
Plan around the crop. Soybean is a kharif crop, so processors are busiest buying and crushing after the autumn harvest. Pitch machinery and maintenance work in the months before.

Is Pithampur part of Indore?

No. Pithampur is a separate industrial town in Dhar district, close enough that most people think of it as Indore's factory belt. Directories, ours included, may file its units under Pithampur or Dhar rather than Indore, so also look at the Madhya Pradesh lists.

Which IT companies are in Indore?

TCS and Infosys have campuses on the Super Corridor, and Crystal IT Park houses several more. Most of the city's software and web firms are smaller and work from offices in Vijay Nagar and nearby.

What is on an Indore industries list?
