Kochi is Kerala's commercial capital, and a list of companies in Kochi takes in a port city, an IT suburb, a refinery and an old chemical belt. Many addresses say Ernakulam rather than Kochi, since the city lies in Ernakulam district and its mainland centre carries that name. If you want a job, the companies' careers pages will serve you better; this guide is for businesses looking for buyers and suppliers. The parts that matter to a seller:

The port and shipping: Cochin Port on Willingdon Island, the container transhipment terminal at Vallarpadam, and the shipping lines, freight forwarders, customs brokers and container yards that work around them. The public sector Cochin Shipyard, which built the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, has a long list of vendors and subcontractors.
Refining and chemicals: BPCL's refinery at Ambalamugal, and along the Periyar near Aluva the Eloor-Edayar belt of fertiliser, chemical and mineral processing units, FACT at Eloor among them.
IT and start-ups: Infopark and SmartCity at Kakkanad, the Cochin Special Economic Zone close by, and the Kerala Startup Mission's campus at Kalamassery.
Exports: seafood processors, many of them around Aroor just south of the city, spice traders in Mattancherry, and coir, cashew and plywood exporters. The national boards for marine products (MPEDA), spices and coir are all headquartered in Kochi.
Trade and services: Broadway and Market Road for wholesale, M.G. Road, Edappally and Palarivattom for showrooms, plus hospitals, hotels and the tourist trade of Fort Kochi.

Perumbavoor, east of Aluva, is a centre of plywood and timber units, and many of its firms deal with Kochi traders every day.

State bodies and other free sources

KINFRA (Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation) develops industrial parks in and around Kochi, and KSIDC promotes and finances larger projects. Their sites describe parks and schemes, not the firms inside or whom to call.
The District Industries Centre in Ernakulam runs the state's MSME schemes and knows the local clusters.
MPEDA, the Spices Board and the Coir Board register exporters in their trades. Their records help you find exporters, but rarely the person who buys.
Chambers and associations: the city's chambers of commerce, CII's Kerala office and KSSIA hold events and keep member directories, mostly for members.

Working a Kochi list

Split mainland, islands and suburbs. Ernakulam's centre; Willingdon Island, Mattancherry and Fort Kochi across the water; Kakkanad to the east; Aluva, Kalamassery and Eloor to the north. Bridges and traffic make cross-city trips slow, so keep each day to one side.
Open in Malayalam, then switch. Owners welcome Malayalam, English is widely used in business, and Hindi helps with the many workers from other states. For example: "Namaskaram, this is Anoop from a reefer transport firm in Aroor. We move frozen seafood from processing plants to the Vallarpadam terminal every day. Who handles your outbound shipments?"
Plan around the seasons. The heavy monsoon from June to September slows site work, the monsoon trawling ban on the Kerala coast affects the seafood trade in June and July, and Onam in August or September is the busiest time for retail.

Questions people ask

Which are the industrial areas in Kochi?

Eloor and Edayar along the Periyar, Kalamassery with its older units and KINFRA's park, Ambalamugal around the refinery, and the export zone and IT parks at Kakkanad. Perumbavoor further east is known for plywood, and Aroor to the south for seafood processing.

Is Ernakulam the same as Kochi?

Ernakulam is the district, and also the name of the city's mainland centre. Kochi is the city as a whole, and businesses use either name in their address. Our Kochi lists include addresses given as Ernakulam.

How many companies are there in Kochi?
