How advocates and law firms work

An advocates list is a directory of practising lawyers with their name, chamber or office address, phone, email, city and area of practice. It helps to know how the profession works, because a senior counsel in Delhi, a district court advocate in Ajmer and a corporate law firm in Mumbai are three very different contacts.

  • Individual advocates are the large majority. Most practise from a chamber in or near the court complex, often with one or two juniors and a clerk (munshi).
  • Senior Advocates are designated by the Supreme Court or a High Court. They argue cases and are briefed through other advocates, so they rarely deal with vendors themselves.
  • Law firms, as partnerships or LLPs, are concentrated in the metros and do most of the corporate, banking and disputes work for companies.
  • In-house lawyers work inside companies and do not usually appear in a directory of practices.

Practice areas follow the courts: civil and property suits, criminal cases and bail, family and matrimonial matters, cheque bounce cases, motor accident claims, consumer complaints, tax and labour. In a small town one advocate handles most of these. In a city, advocates specialise, and the category column in a lawyers directory starts to matter.

Bar Council rolls and court directories

Every advocate is enrolled on the roll of a state bar council, such as the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa or the Bar Council of Rajasthan, and the Bar Council of India oversees the councils. Enrolment gives each advocate an enrolment number tied to that state council. The free sources:

  • State bar council websites. Several let you look up an advocate by enrolment number or name. You get one record at a time, usually without a mobile number.
  • Court bar associations. The bar association at each High Court and district court keeps a member list, sometimes printed in an annual diary. It is meant for members.
  • The Supreme Court's list of advocates-on-record, the advocates allowed to file cases there.

None of these gives you the advocates of a city with phone numbers and practice areas in one sheet. That is the gap a ready-made advocates directory fills.

What the advertising rules mean for a lawyers list

Bar Council of India rules do not allow advocates to advertise or solicit work, directly or through others. An advocate may share limited facts, such as name, contact details, enrolment and areas of practice, on their own website, but may not tout for clients. This matters mainly to advocates themselves:

  • If you are an advocate, do not use a bought list, cold calls or bulk messages to look for clients. Check the current rules with your bar council.
  • If you sell to advocates, such as software, books or office supplies, the rule is about their conduct, not yours. You can offer them your products and services.
  • If you need a lawyer, you are free to approach advocates yourself and ask about their experience and fees.

Our advocates directory by city

Our Lawyers & Legal Firms list has 67,982 advocates, chambers and law firms. The biggest city groups are Jaipur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Vadodara and Delhi. 46% of rows have a mobile number and 59% an email address; 55% carry the advocate's own name rather than only a firm or chamber name. Many advocates do not publish a mobile number, so read the sample rows and plan for email as well as calls. Each list page shows 60 contacts free, and the list is also sold for 15 cities and 9 states.

The category is how each advocate or firm describes the practice:

Who buys an advocates list

  • Legal research and software firms: case-law databases, cause list and hearing date alerts, practice management and e-filing tools.
  • Publishers and booksellers of bare acts, commentaries and law journals.
  • Office and court supplies: chamber furniture, photocopiers, legal-size paper, and tailors who make advocates' coats, gowns and bands.
  • Services for chambers: typing, translation into English for High Court filings, stenographers, couriers and professional indemnity insurance.
  • Organisations that hire lawyers: banks and NBFCs that empanel advocates for title search reports and recovery cases, companies that need local counsel in another state, and families with a property matter in their home town.

Getting a busy advocate to listen

  1. Respect the court day. Courts sit from mid-morning to late afternoon, and advocates spend that time in court. Call between 5 and 7 pm, when they are back in chambers, or on a court holiday.
  2. Use the vacations. High Courts take a long summer break, and many advocates have time then for a demo or a visit.
  3. Open with their court, not your company. For example: "Good evening, sir. I am calling from a Jaipur company that sends your next hearing dates from the Jaipur bench cause list to your phone each evening. Would a two-week free trial help your chamber?"
  4. Be ready for their questions: which courts and benches you cover, whether it works in Hindi or the local language, how client details are kept confidential, and the yearly cost.
  5. Ask for introductions. One chamber that likes your product can introduce you to others in the same court.

Our telecalling scripts in Hindi and English help you prepare the first call, and the guide to DND checks covers the TRAI rules for calls and SMS.

Questions people ask about lawyers directories

Is there an official directory of all advocates in India?

Not one you can download. Each state bar council keeps its own roll, and some let you check an advocate online. There is no official contact list meant for outreach.

How can I check that someone is a real advocate?

Ask for the enrolment number and the name of the state bar council, then check with that council. The bar council identity card and membership of the local bar association are further signs.

Can a lawyer use this list to find clients?

Not to solicit work, which the Bar Council rules forbid. An advocate can use it for other purposes, such as finding a colleague in another city to handle a local hearing.
