Agents, advisors and brokers: who does what

An LIC agents list is a contact sheet of people who sell LIC policies, usually with their name, mobile number, city and sometimes an email. Most people who search for one want a wider net, though. The agents of private insurers, health insurance advisors and mutual fund distributors do similar work in the same neighbourhoods, and often the same person does all of it. The roles:

  • LIC agents. LIC appoints its own agents through its branch offices, and development officers recruit and guide them. Many have served the same families for years.
  • Agents of private insurers, in life, general and health insurance, each appointed by the insurer under IRDAI's rules.
  • Point of Sales Persons (POSPs), who sell simpler products, often through an insurtech platform or a broker.
  • Insurance brokers, licensed by IRDAI, who act for the buyer and compare several insurers. Many focus on business and group cover.
  • Corporate agents, such as banks selling insurance at their branches.
  • Financial advisors: mutual fund distributors registered with AMFI, who hold an ARN, and SEBI-registered investment advisers, who charge clients a fee for advice.

In a small town, one office near the market may be an LIC agency, a health insurance counter and a mutual fund desk at once.

Where agents are registered, and what you can check

IRDAI regulates insurers, agents and brokers, but agents are appointed through their insurer, so there is no single public directory of agents you can download. What you can check:

  • An agent code, with the insurer. Every agent has one. The insurer's branch or customer care can tell you whether it is genuine.
  • IRDAI's lists of licensed insurance brokers and corporate agents, published on its website.
  • The ARN of a mutual fund distributor, which AMFI lets you verify, and SEBI's register of investment advisers, the closest thing to an official list of financial advisors in India.

These checks tell you whether someone is licensed. They do not give you the agents of a city with phone numbers, and insurers keep their agent lists to themselves. An insurance agents list from a data provider fills that gap, though no outside list will match an insurer's own records.

Our LIC agents list and advisor data

The main list here is Insurance & Financial Advisors: 16,907 agents, advisors and consultants in 30 cities. 97% have a mobile number and 31% an email address; 97% have an office address and 76% a PIN code, handy for planning visits by area. 96% show what they sell, such as life insurance, general insurance or investment advice. The biggest groups are in Mumbai, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi.

We also sell LIC Agents (Email List), with 8,525 contacts. It holds email addresses rather than phone numbers, so it suits an email campaign more than calling. Every list page shows 60 real rows, so you can see which fields are filled before you pay.

Who buys an insurance agents list

  • Insurers and insurtech platforms recruiting agents and POSPs in towns where they have few.
  • Software for agents: client management and renewal reminder apps, premium calculators, and digital visiting cards and brochures to share on WhatsApp.
  • Printers and gift suppliers. Agents give clients calendars, diaries and festival gifts, and order them in bulk before Diwali and the new year.
  • Training and coaching for licence exams, selling skills and financial planning qualifications.
  • Mutual fund platforms, stock brokers and loan companies looking for distributors and referral partners who already have a client base. Our stock brokers list guide covers the broking side.

Approaching agents in their working week

Agents spend their days in the field, and many meet salaried clients in the evenings and at weekends. That shapes when and how to reach them:

  1. Call late morning, from about 10:30 am to 1 pm, after office work and before client visits. Avoid month-ends and, above all, March, when insurers push to close the year's targets.
  2. Open with their renewals, not your features. For example: "Namaste, sir. I am calling from an Indore company that sends your clients' premium due reminders on WhatsApp in Hindi. How do you remind clients today?"
  3. Have answers ready on the monthly cost, whether it handles LIC and private insurers' policies, how clients' details are kept private, and whether it runs on a basic Android phone.
  4. Go through the branch when your offer suits many agents at once. A development officer or branch manager can, if they agree, give you a few minutes at an agents' meeting.
  5. Message on WhatsApp only those who have agreed to it. Our WhatsApp marketing guide explains opt-in and templates, and the DND check guide covers calls and SMS.

Questions people ask about agent lists

How do I check that someone is a genuine LIC agent?

Ask for their agent code and the branch they work under, then confirm it with that LIC branch or LIC's customer care. Pay premiums only through LIC's own channels.

Is a financial advisor the same as an insurance agent?

Not always. An agent earns commission from the insurer, while a SEBI-registered investment adviser charges the client a fee for advice. Mutual fund distributors earn commission on the funds they sell, and many people use "financial advisor" for all three.

Can I get agents in just one city?

For agents and advisors in general, yes: use the city lists above, or combine cities and lists in the list builder. If your city is missing, request a custom list.
