Lead generation companies in India: agencies vs data lists

What lead generation companies in India sell
Lead generation companies in India sell one of five things, and comparing them only makes sense once you know which. Many agencies offer more than one:
| Model | You pay for | Works best when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay per lead | Each enquiry or form fill | Your product sells on a quick quote | Leads shared with competitors; a vague definition of a lead |
| Retainer | A monthly fee to run ads, email or LinkedIn outreach, plus the ad spend | You can follow up every enquiry the same day | Reports full of clicks, with few conversations |
| Appointment setting | Each qualified meeting booked, or a monthly fee | A deal is big enough to justify a meeting | Meetings with people who can't buy |
| Outsourced telecalling | Callers' seats or hours each month | You have a clear script and a big list | Callers who don't understand the product; DND complaints in your name |
| B2B marketplaces | A yearly subscription that brings buyer enquiries | You sell standard products at known rates | Many sellers chasing the same enquiry |
There is a sixth option people often forget: buy a contact list for your trade and city, and do the calling yourself or with one telecaller. More on that below.
Working out what a lead really costs
Agencies quote in different units: per lead, per meeting, per seat, per month. Turn every quote into the same one, the cost of one new customer. You need three figures from a pilot:
- Total spent: the agency's fee, any ad spend, and your own team's time on follow-up.
- Leads delivered, by the definition in your agreement.
- Customers won from those leads within a fixed period, such as 90 days.
Divide the first by the third. If one lead in ten becomes a customer, a customer costs ten times the price of a lead, plus your follow-up time. Then compare that with what a customer is worth to you over a year. A cheap lead that never converts is the most expensive kind.
How to judge a lead generation agency
Ask these questions before you sign, and get the answers in writing:
- What exactly counts as a lead? A name and number, a filled form, a person who confirmed interest on a call, or a meeting that took place? The definition decides what you pay for.
- Is it exclusive? Will the same enquiry also go to your competitors?
- Where do the leads come from? Ads, the agency's own database, calling or LinkedIn? Ask to see the script or the ads that will carry your name.
- What happens to a bad lead? Wrong numbers, duplicates and job seekers should be replaced or credited.
- How do they follow the rules? For calls and SMS, ask whether they use a registered telemarketer and respect the DND register. A complaint will name your brand, not theirs; our DND guide explains what to expect.
- Can you see the work? Call recordings, a shared sheet or access to the CRM, and weekly reports that count conversations, not just clicks.
- Who owns the data once the contract ends?
- Can you speak to two current clients in a business like yours?
Start with a short paid pilot of four to eight weeks, with a fixed budget and a clear target, before you agree to any long contract.
Red flags
- Guaranteed sales, or a guaranteed number of orders.
- A very low price per lead with no written definition of a lead.
- A long lock-in paid upfront, with no pilot.
- No company name, GST number, address or proper invoice.
- "Leads" that turn out to be a plain list of numbers, charged at a per-lead price.
- Bulk WhatsApp or SMS from random numbers, or offers of consumer data such as bank customers. Both can land your business in trouble.
- No call recordings or reports, or reluctance to say who they call and how.
When a list and your own calls are cheaper
An agency makes sense when you need volume quickly, have nobody to make calls, or sell to large companies where one booked meeting is worth a lot. Buying a list and calling yourself is usually cheaper when:
- your buyers are owner-run businesses that answer the phone, such as dealers, clinics, workshops and shops;
- your product needs someone who knows it well to explain it;
- your market is one trade in a few cities, not the whole country;
- you or a salesperson have a few spare hours a day.
A Starleads city, state or specialisation list costs ₹499, and bulk data for one industry across India ₹1,999. Every list shows 60 real contacts and its share of mobile numbers and emails before you pay. One telecaller working through it with the 7-day calling plan and our cold calling tips can usually tell within a couple of weeks whether a trade is worth pursuing. The biggest All-India lists:
- Website Owners 9,03,365 contacts · 99% email · 88% mobile ₹1,999
- IT & Networking Professionals 7,52,206 contacts · 97% email · 99% mobile ₹1,999
- Purchase & Procurement Heads 7,20,929 contacts · 28% email · 93% mobile ₹1,999
- General & Senior Managers 3,82,111 contacts · 98% email · 97% mobile ₹1,999
- Business Owners & Proprietors 3,27,377 contacts · 2% email · 98% mobile ₹1,999
- Company Secretaries 3,21,625 contacts · 98% email · 99% mobile ₹1,999
You can also hand your own list to an appointment-setting agency to call for you, which keeps the data in your hands. Our guide to buying business leads and the checklist for B2B data providers cover what to check in any list, and our comparison of lead generation tools covers the software side.
Questions people ask
What is B2B lead generation?
Finding businesses that might buy from you and starting a conversation with the person who decides. It can be done through ads, content, email, calls, events or referrals, by your own team or by an agency.
Pay per lead or retainer: which is better?
Pay per lead puts more of the risk on the agency, but only if a lead is well defined and exclusive. A retainer suits longer campaigns where you want the agency to test and improve. Either way, judge it by the cost per customer, not the cost per lead.
Is a lead generation agency worth it for a small business?
Only if the value of one customer covers the cost. For small orders, marketplace subscriptions or a list called by your own staff usually cost less than a monthly retainer. If you try an agency, ask for a pilot with a cap on spend.
How long before lead generation shows results?
Calling a good list brings replies within days. Ad and content campaigns usually need a few weeks to learn what works. Give a pilot long enough to produce customers, not just enquiries, and agree that period at the start.
