Lead generation tools: which kind does what
"Lead generation tools" covers six quite different kinds of product, and most Indian B2B teams use two or three of them together. Here is what each is for, and where each falls short with Indian data:
| Kind of tool | Good for | Limits with Indian SMB data |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn Sales Navigator | Named managers at mid-sized and large companies | Few shop owners and traders; no phone numbers |
| Email finders and verifiers | Work emails at companies with their own domain | Many small firms use Gmail or other free addresses |
| Global B2B data platforms | Large companies, tech firms, overseas markets | Coverage of small Indian businesses is often thin |
| Google Maps and directory sites | Checking local businesses one at a time | Slow by hand; terms restrict bulk copying |
| Ready contact lists | Every business of one trade in a city or state | No buying signals; contacts go out of date |
| CRMs and calling tools | Tracking leads, calls and follow-ups | They store leads; they don't find them |
The right mix depends on who you sell to. If your buyers are HR heads at IT companies in Bengaluru, start with LinkedIn. If they are hardware dealers in Ludhiana, start with a list and a phone.
LinkedIn Sales Navigator
Sales Navigator is LinkedIn's paid search for salespeople. It filters people by job title, seniority, company size, industry and location, lets you save leads and accounts, alerts you when they change jobs or post, and lets you send InMail to people you are not connected with.
It is the strongest tool on this page for reaching named managers at mid-sized and large companies, especially in IT, services, banking and multinationals. Its limits for Indian selling are just as clear. Many owners of small manufacturers, traders and shops have no profile or rarely open it; it gives no phone numbers; and InMail credits are limited each month. LinkedIn's rules also restrict extensions and automation tools that copy profiles or send messages in bulk, and accounts that use them can be restricted.
Many people search for the Sales Navigator price in India. LinkedIn shows its current plans and prices on its own website. They change, and differ by plan and between monthly and yearly billing, so check there before you budget.
Email finders, verifiers and global data platforms
Email finders work out a person's work address from their name and their company's domain, such as firstname@company.com, and test whether the address accepts mail. Verifiers check a list you already have and flag the addresses that will bounce. Both help when you write to companies with their own domain, and a verifier is sensible before any campaign. Our business email lists guide covers the sending side.
Global B2B data platforms, the kind people mean when they look for a ZoomInfo, Lusha or Apollo alternative, combine company and contact databases with search filters, email sequences and browser extensions. They are built mainly for selling into North America and Europe, and are priced per user or in credits.
As a general observation, they are strongest on large companies and tech firms and thinner on Indian small businesses. The owner of a Surat textile unit or a Coimbatore pump dealer may not be there at all, or only with a generic email. Many small Indian businesses use free email addresses, which pattern-guessing cannot find.
Before you pay for any tool, run a simple test: look up twenty businesses you already know well, such as your own customers, and count how many come back with a correct mobile number and email.
Google Maps, directories and B2B marketplaces
Google Maps is the freshest free view of local businesses: name, phone number, address, opening hours, photos and reviews. It is excellent for checking a business before a call or a visit, and for seeing which competitors work in an area. It is slow for building a list, because you copy one listing at a time, and Google's terms don't allow automated collection. Our guide to Google Maps scrapers and Justdial extractors explains the risks of the tools that try.
Local directories such as Justdial and Sulekha work in a similar way, and sell paid listings to businesses that want enquiries. B2B marketplaces such as IndiaMART and TradeIndia sell subscriptions to sellers, who then receive buyer enquiries; the same enquiry often reaches several sellers, so a fast reply decides who wins it. Our guide to business directory websites covers where to list your own business for free.
Ready contact lists
A ready contact list is the quickest way to reach every business of one kind in a place: all the dental clinics in Pune, or all the steel traders in Gujarat. You get a spreadsheet you can sort, filter and load into a calling tool or CRM the same day.
Starleads sells these lists, 6,357 of them across 148 industries and 467 cities. Each list page shows 60 real contacts and the share of rows with a mobile number, an email and an address before you buy. A city, state or specialisation list costs ₹499, and bulk data for one industry across India ₹1,999. The biggest All-India lists:
- Website Owners 9,03,365 contacts · 99% email · 88% mobile ₹1,999
- IT & Networking Professionals 7,52,206 contacts · 97% email · 99% mobile ₹1,999
- Purchase & Procurement Heads 7,20,929 contacts · 28% email · 93% mobile ₹1,999
- General & Senior Managers 3,82,111 contacts · 98% email · 97% mobile ₹1,999
- Business Owners & Proprietors 3,27,377 contacts · 2% email · 98% mobile ₹1,999
- Company Secretaries 3,21,625 contacts · 98% email · 99% mobile ₹1,999
The limits are real. A list tells you who exists, not who is ready to buy today. Contact details change, so some numbers will be wrong or switched off, and any list, ours included, misses some businesses. Before promotional calls or SMS, follow the DND rules, and use our checklist for choosing a data provider to compare sellers.
CRMs, calling tools and a simple stack
A CRM doesn't find leads; it stores them and reminds you to follow up. Zoho CRM and LeadSquared come from Indian companies and are widely used here, Freshsales comes from Freshworks, which started in Chennai, and HubSpot and Salesforce are the big global names. For a team of one or two, a well-kept spreadsheet does the same job at first.
Cloud telephony services such as Exotel, Knowlarity and MyOperator give a team one business number, call recording and call logs, which helps when several people work the same list. They help you track calls; promotional calling through them still has to follow TRAI's rules.
Two combinations that work for Indian teams:
- Selling to small businesses such as shops, clinics, traders and workshops: a contact list for your trade and city, a spreadsheet or simple CRM, a phone, and WhatsApp or email for people who agree to hear from you. The 7-day calling plan and our cold calling tips show how to work through it.
- Selling to larger companies: Sales Navigator to find the people, an email finder and verifier for their addresses, a CRM to track accounts, and a list of purchase or HR heads where you need phone numbers.
If you would rather pay someone else to run the outreach, our guide to lead generation companies compares the options.
Questions people ask
What is the best free lead generation tool?
For local B2B leads, Google Maps used by hand, a free LinkedIn account and the enquiries on B2B marketplaces cost nothing but time. A spreadsheet is a perfectly good free CRM for the first few hundred leads.
Is there a cheaper ZoomInfo or Apollo alternative for India?
It depends on who you sell to. For named managers at large companies, LinkedIn and an email finder may be enough. For small Indian businesses with mobile numbers, a ready list for the trade and city often costs less per usable contact than credits on a global platform. Test any tool with businesses you already know before you commit.
How much does LinkedIn Sales Navigator cost in India?
Check LinkedIn's own pricing page. Prices change, differ between plans and depend on monthly or yearly billing, so a figure quoted elsewhere may be out of date.
Can I use these tools to send bulk WhatsApp messages?
Only to people who have agreed to hear from you, and through WhatsApp's business tools. Our WhatsApp marketing guide explains the rules.
