Textile companies in Ahmedabad after the mill era

Textile companies in Ahmedabad once meant composite mills, whose chimneys earned the city the name "Manchester of the East". Most of those mills closed in the 1980s and 1990s. The trade did not leave; it broke into smaller pieces, and those pieces still buy yarn, dyes, machines and services every week:

  • Denim and large integrated makers: Arvind is the best-known survivor, and other denim and shirting producers run plants on the city's outskirts.
  • Processing houses: dyeing, printing and finishing units in Narol and Vatva, many of them working on cotton.
  • Cloth markets: the New Cloth Market, Maskati Market and the lanes of the walled city, wholesaling suiting, shirting, sarees and dress material.
  • Cotton and yarn: brokers and dealers handling Gujarat cotton and the yarn spun from it, along with cotton waste traders.
  • Machinery and chemicals: textile machinery and spares makers in the industrial estates, and suppliers of dyes and auxiliaries, helped by the dye makers next door in Vatva.
  • Garments and design: jeans and shirt makers, ethnic wear units and design studios.

The practical point for a seller: Ahmedabad leans to cotton and denim, Surat to synthetics, and most of the buying here is done by small and mid-sized processors and traders, not by the few big names.

Free sources for Ahmedabad's textile firms

  • ATMA, the Ahmedabad Textile Mills' Association, speaks for the larger mills; its Ashram Road building was designed by Le Corbusier. Small processors and traders are outside it.
  • ATIRA, the textile research association, tests fibre, yarn and fabric. A useful technical contact, not a directory.
  • GCCI, the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has textile members across the trade.
  • Market mahajans and processors' associations. The cloth markets have traders' associations, and the processing houses have their own. Records exist, but they are kept for members.
  • TEXPROCIL, the cotton textiles export promotion council, lists exporting members. Domestic traders are missing.

A GST taxpayer search confirms that a trader's registration is active before you send cloth or yarn on credit. None of these sources sorts firms by what they actually buy.

Our textile companies in Ahmedabad list

The Textiles & Fabrics in Ahmedabad file lists 1,438 businesses. 88% come with a mobile number and 93% with an email address. 67% name a contact and 36% give a website. Look through 60 real rows and the free sample first; this city list costs ₹499.

Fabric and yarn businesses make up much of it, but the file also carries textile chemical and auxiliary suppliers, machinery and spares dealers, raw cotton and cotton waste traders, grey fabric sellers and accessory firms. A category is filled in for 64% of rows. If you were after a textile companies in Ahmedabad list for one stage only, filter that column first.

Area names are rare in this file, but most rows have a PIN code, which is how you separate walled-city traders from units on the industrial fringe. The few area labels that recur include New Cloth Market, Sarangpur, Narol, Navrangpura, Kankaria and Ashram Road.

Who sells to Ahmedabad's mills, processors and cloth traders

  • Denim makers and washers: indigo and sulphur dyes, sizing chemicals, enzymes and softeners, and laser and ozone finishing machines.
  • Processing houses: reactive and vat dyes from Vatva's makers, printing screens, stenters and their spares, boilers and thermic fluid heaters, and effluent treatment.
  • Spinners and weavers: cotton bale traders and ginners, yarn agents, and spares for looms and spinning machines.
  • Garment units: sewing machines, trims, labels and washing services.
  • Cloth traders: transporters to other states, bale packing, and billing and stock software.
  • Every unit with a big power bill: energy audits and rooftop solar.

Many Ahmedabad mills and garment makers export; our textile and garment exporters guide covers that market, and the India-wide textile guide maps the other hubs.

Working the Ahmedabad textile list

  1. Split by stage. Yarn and cotton traders, grey cloth sellers, processors and chemical suppliers need different offers. The Category column does most of the sorting.
  2. Talk in the trade's terms. Denim buyers think in ounces and shade numbers, cotton yarn buyers in counts such as 30s or 40s, processors in rates per metre of job work.
  3. Make a specific opening. For example: "Good afternoon. We service stenters and supply their spares to process houses in Narol and Vatva, with a mechanic available the same day. Who handles maintenance at your unit?"
  4. Plan the walled city separately. Its markets are crowded and hard to drive into. Phone ahead so the owner is in the shop, and go by auto rather than car. Narol and Vatva, on the southern edge, make a separate day.
  5. Mind the season. Cotton traders are busiest when the new crop arrives in winter, and most of the trade slows down over Diwali.
  6. Stay within the rules. Our DND guide explains what to check before promotional calls or SMS.
