Kolkata's hospitals, from College Street to the Bypass
This guide is for suppliers, labs and service firms using a list of hospitals in Kolkata. Anyone looking for care should contact the hospital directly, and in an emergency call 112.
Kolkata treats patients from across eastern India and the North-East, and its hospitals fall into a few clear groups for a seller:
- The government medical college hospitals. SSKM on AJC Bose Road, Medical College on College Street, NRS near Sealdah and R.G. Kar in the north, among others. They buy through the state health department's procurement, tenders and the Government e-Marketplace.
- The EM Bypass belt. Large private hospitals along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, from Phoolbagan and Kankurgachi down to Kasba, Anandapur and Mukundapur, with formal purchase teams, vendor registration and a ring of diagnostic centres, pharmacies and patient guest houses around them.
- The older centre and south. Park Street, Circus Avenue, Alipore, Bhowanipore, Kalighat and Lake Market, with long-established private hospitals and nursing homes, many in old buildings.
- The north. Shyambazar, Belgachia and Lake Town, and beyond the city limits Dum Dum and Baranagar, full of family-run nursing homes.
- Salt Lake and New Town. Newer hospitals, specialist centres and diagnostic chains in the planned townships to the east.
Howrah, across the river, is a separate city with its own hospitals.
Who sells to Kolkata hospitals
- Fire and electrical safety. Since a deadly hospital fire in the city in 2011, fire safety has been a standing concern. Fire audits, alarm and sprinkler work, and wiring upgrades in old buildings are steady business.
- Monsoon work. Waterlogging from June to September makes pumps, drainage, waterproofing and generator checks worth selling in April and May.
- Equipment and its upkeep: dealers, service engineers and maintenance contracts for monitors, OT equipment, imaging and lab analysers.
- Services for travelling patients: guest houses, interpreters, transport and travel desks near the Bypass hospitals.
- Medicines and diagnostics: pharma and surgical distributors, and labs that take samples from smaller nursing homes.
- Daily services: linen and laundry, housekeeping, security, nurse staffing, medical gases, lift upkeep and biomedical waste collection.

- Clinical establishment licences. Private hospitals and nursing homes in West Bengal need a licence under the state's Clinical Establishments Act, and a regulatory commission set up under that law hears patients' complaints. A licence proves a hospital may operate, not who buys for it.
- Swasthya Sathi. The state's own health scheme lists its empanelled hospitals. Only hospitals that joined appear.
- CGHS. The Central Government Health Scheme publishes the private hospitals empanelled in Kolkata.
- NABH. The accreditation board lists accredited hospitals, useful if you sell quality and audit services.
Each of these confirms that a hospital exists and is approved for something. None gives you a purchase officer's name, a mobile number or a file you can sort.
Inside our list of hospitals in Kolkata
The Hospitals & Nursing Homes in Kolkata list has 320 entries. 24% have a mobile number and 86% a landline, usually the reception or board line; 57% include an email address, and 94% a PIN code. Landlines far outnumber mobiles here, so plan on calling the board line and asking for the right desk. Sixty real rows and a free Excel sample are on the list page. City lists cost ₹499 each, paid by UPI.
The file is mostly nursing homes and private hospitals, with some general hospitals. About 46% of rows have a category, so read the names too: "nursing home", "maternity" or "polyclinic" usually tells you what a place is.
Areas that show up most
The areas with the most entries, without post office labels. Many rows have no area, so use these for routes, not as a ranking:

- Salt Lake City: 5
- Lake Town: 4
- Deshbandhu Nagar: 3
- Kalighat: 3
- Kankurgachi: 3
- Lake Market: 3
- Park Street: 3

Calling and visiting Kolkata hospitals
- Plan four runs. The centre and south (Park Street, Alipore, Bhowanipore, Kalighat), the Bypass (Phoolbagan to Mukundapur), the north (Shyambazar, Belgachia, Lake Town, Dum Dum) and Salt Lake with New Town. One run a day keeps you out of the worst traffic.
- Get past the reception. With most numbers going to a board line, ask for the purchase department, the biomedical engineer or, at a nursing home, the owner doctor by name or role. Our cold calling tips cover what to say to the operator.
- Speak Bengali if you can. It is welcome with owners and staff; Hindi works with many, and corporate hospitals run in English.
- Open plainly. For example: "Nomoshkar, sir. I'm Arnab from a Kasba firm that washes and returns hospital linen within a day, already serving nursing homes near the Bypass. Who decides on laundry for your hospital?"
- Mind the calendar. The city slows down for about a week around Durga Puja, usually in September or October, and heavy rain disrupts travel in the monsoon. Close contracts before Puja or after.
- Stay within the rules. Check the DND rules before promotional calls or SMS.
Questions people ask
Does the Kolkata list include Salt Lake, New Town and Howrah?
It covers hospitals whose address gives Kolkata as the city, and some in Salt Lake do. Howrah hospitals, and those that give North 24 Parganas as their district, are in the West Bengal list; the list builder can join several places in one file.
Can I get a list of hospitals in Kolkata with email IDs?
Partly: 57% of rows in ours have an email address. A short email with one clear question, followed by a call to the board line, works better than a brochure. Contact details change, so expect a few bounces.
How many hospitals are there in Kolkata?
No public source gives one reliable figure, because nursing homes open, close and change names often. Our Kolkata file lists 320 hospitals and nursing homes. For the city's other industries, see our list of companies in Kolkata.
