Old head offices, mills and markets: Kolkata's business mix
Kolkata was the capital of British India until 1911, and a list of companies in Kolkata still carries that history. Old business houses keep their offices around BBD Bagh, Park Street and Camac Street, while the trade of eastern India passes through the lanes of Burrabazar. A job seeker wants the first group. A seller usually needs both, plus the mills and workshops across the river:
- Head offices: ITC, Coal India, Exide Industries, Emami and Berger Paints are run from Kolkata, along with many tea and jute companies and public sector firms.
- Tea: tea companies, brokers and blenders, with the Kolkata tea auctions at the centre of the trade.
- Jute and engineering: jute mills along both banks of the Hooghly, and foundries and engineering workshops in Howrah.
- Leather: tanneries and leather goods makers in the Kolkata Leather Complex at Bantala.
- Wholesale trade: Burrabazar for almost everything, Posta for food grains and spices, Ezra Street for electrical goods, Chandni Chowk for computers and electronics, Bowbazar for jewellery. Goods from here supply the East, the North-East, Nepal and Bhutan.
- IT and services: software firms and back offices in Salt Lake Sector V and New Town, plus steel traders, brokers, hotels and hospitals across the city.
Kolkata industries list: what free records show and miss
- MCA master data gives you the registered office, the directors and the current status of any company or LLP. Kolkata has a long tail of old companies, so check the status: a firm marked struck off or dormant is not a customer. Partnerships and proprietors in Burrabazar do not appear at all.
- WBIDC (West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation) publishes its industrial parks and growth centres. It shows where industry is, not who to call.
- Chambers: the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Indian Chamber of Commerce, the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Bharat Chamber of Commerce all have members across trades. Trade bodies such as the Indian Jute Mills Association and the Calcutta Tea Traders Association cover their own industries.
- Commodity boards: the Tea Board of India and the National Jute Board are both based in Kolkata and deal with registered firms in their trades, though their public lists are limited.
- District industries centres for Kolkata, Howrah and the 24 Parganas handle small industry registrations and schemes, not contact lists.
Our guide to MCA and GST look-ups shows how to read a company's status before you call.

Who sells to Kolkata's offices, mills and traders
- Spare parts, lubricants and packaging suppliers for jute mills and Howrah foundries.
- Consumer brands looking for distributors and stockists to cover the East through Burrabazar traders.
- Cement, steel and building material sellers calling contractors and builders.
- Trading platforms and research firms selling to the city's many brokers; see our stock brokers guide.
- Leather chemicals, hardware and export packaging firms selling to Bantala; our leather exporters guide covers that trade.
- Logistics firms moving port cargo and goods to the North-East and the neighbouring countries.
Calling Kolkata: language, timing and the festive calendar
- Group the list by business district. BBD Bagh, Park Street and Camac Street for head offices; Burrabazar, Posta and Ezra Street for traders; Salt Lake and New Town for IT; Howrah and the mill towns across the river for industry.
- Choose the language. Bengali goes down well with local firms, and a "Namaskar" at the start costs nothing. Much of the Burrabazar trade runs in Hindi. Corporate offices work in English.
- Open with the place you serve. "Namaskar, I'm calling from a packaging firm in Howrah. We supply three jute mills on the Hooghly. Who looks after your packing material?"
- Work around the festivals. The city slows down for a week or more around Durga Puja, so finish outreach before it or start after. On Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year in April, many traders open new account books and welcome their regular customers; it is a day for visits to existing buyers, not cold calls.
- Expect slower decisions in older firms. Owners and long-serving managers like to see a written offer first. Send one by email, using our cold email templates, then call. Check the DND rules before any call or SMS.
Questions people ask
Which part of Kolkata has the IT companies?
Mostly in Salt Lake Sector V and in New Town (Rajarhat), with a few in the central business district. Smaller web and software firms are spread across south Kolkata.
Where does Kolkata's manufacturing happen now?
Few large plants remain inside the city. Look in Howrah, the jute towns along the Hooghly, Kalyani, Bantala and the Falta SEZ, and further out at Haldia and Durgapur; the West Bengal lists cover the whole state.
Is there a Kolkata company list with phone numbers and emails?
Yes, in Excel. Free directory sites show a few numbers at a time, and old PDF lists are rarely current, so an Excel sheet, sorted by locality and business type, saves hours of calling.
