Refineries, chemicals and engineering: what Vadodara makes

Vadodara, still Baroda to many, is one of Gujarat's big industrial cities, and a list of companies in Vadodara is weighted towards plants rather than shops. A few very large units sit at the centre of a wide circle of contractors, fabricators and suppliers. New engineering graduates want to know which of the big names are hiring. Suppliers want the purchase and maintenance people in the plants, and the small firms that serve them:

Refining, petrochemicals and fertilisers: Indian Oil's Gujarat Refinery at Koyali, Reliance's petrochemical complex, GSFC (Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals) and GACL (Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals).
Chemicals and pharma: units across the GIDC estates of Nandesari, Ranoli, Makarpura, Por, Waghodia and Savli. Alembic is a Vadodara company, and bulk drug and formulation units are spread around the city.
Engineering and power equipment: makers of transformers, switchgear, cables, pumps and process equipment, plus a crowd of fabricators and machine shops in Makarpura.
Rail and aerospace: Alstom's rail coach plant at Savli and the Tata aircraft assembly line for the C-295.
Auto, a short drive away: the Halol estate in Panchmahal district, with MG Motor's car plant.
City trade and services: the old markets of Mandvi, Raopura and Navabazar, offices and showrooms in Alkapuri, hospitals, and the colleges around the Maharaja Sayajirao University.

Finding Vadodara companies without paying

GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation) publishes estate-wise details and plot allotments. Use it to see which estate a unit belongs to; it has no phone numbers.
MCA master data covers the big companies and the private limited firms well, one at a time. Many fabricators, traders and job workers are proprietors or partnerships and are not in it.
Associations: the Federation of Gujarat Industries (FGI) is based in Vadodara, GCCI covers all of Gujarat, and most GIDC estates have their own industries association. Their member lists are a good start where you can get them.
Vendor portals of the big plants: refineries and public sector units publish how to register as a vendor and post tenders. They do not publish their vendors.
The district industries centre in Vadodara supports small units with registrations and incentives, but keeps no public list.

How Vadodara's plants and offices like to be approached

Sort by estate. Makarpura and Por lie to the south, Nandesari and Ranoli to the north near the refinery, Waghodia to the east and Savli to the north-east. Offices cluster in Alkapuri, Race Course and Akota.
Know who decides. Large plants buy through registered vendors and tenders, so your first call is to get on the list. Smaller units are owner-run and will buy on a phone call if your price and delivery are right.
Lead with documents. Plants ask for GST registration, test certificates and past supply references. Have them ready to email before the first call ends.
Speak their language. Most owners are Gujarati; Hindi and English work too, since engineers come from all over India. A "Kem cho" at the start is appreciated. A typical opener: "Namaste, we supply SS valves to units in Nandesari and Ranoli, with stock in Vadodara. Who handles valve purchases at your plant?"
Mind the calendar. During Navratri the city's evenings belong to garba, and after Diwali many Gujarati firms stay closed until Labh Pancham. Uttarayan in January is another day off. Check the DND rules before calls or SMS.

Questions people ask

Is Baroda the same as Vadodara?

Yes. Vadodara is the official name and Baroda the older one, still used in names such as Bank of Baroda and the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Search for both when you look a firm up online.

Which large plants does Vadodara have?

The Indian Oil refinery at Koyali, Reliance's petrochemical complex, GSFC, GACL and Alembic are among the best known, along with the rail and aircraft plants at Savli and in the city. Around them work a great many smaller suppliers, contractors and traders, and those are the firms most sellers end up calling.
