Where Mumbai's IT businesses work

An "IT companies in Mumbai list" means one thing to a graduate and another to a seller. This guide is written for the seller: a business that wants Mumbai's IT firms as customers. Graduates looking for work should go to company careers pages and job portals instead.

Mumbai has no single tech park that defines it. Its IT trade grew up around the banks, insurers, brokers, media houses and retailers that are headquartered here, and it is spread across the suburbs and beyond the creek:

  • Andheri East: SEEPZ, which began as an electronics export zone and still houses software units beside its jewellery makers, plus the MIDC estate and office blocks off the Western Express Highway.
  • Powai: IT service, consulting and product firms in the office towers around the lake, close to IIT Bombay.
  • Goregaon and Malad: office parks along the highway and Link Road, with IT and back-office floors.
  • Navi Mumbai and Thane: IT parks on MIDC land in Airoli and Mahape along the Thane-Belapur road, and Wagle Estate in Thane, an industrial estate where many IT offices now sit.
  • BKC, Lower Parel and Fort: head offices of banks and financial firms, which buy a great deal of software and IT services.
  • Lamington Road: near Grant Road station, the city's old market for computers, parts and networking gear, where many hardware sellers in an IT list trade.

What the free sources give you

  • STPI has a centre for the Mumbai region and registers software exporters. You learn that a firm exports services, not who buys for it.
  • MIDC publishes its industrial areas and IT parks, from Andheri to Airoli and Mahape. That tells you where the buildings are, not who sits inside them.
  • NASSCOM and fintech events publish speaker and sponsor names. A good way to meet firms, but the names come without the buyer's number.
  • MCA and GST look-ups confirm a firm's legal name and status, one search at a time. A Lamington Road dealer trading as a proprietor will not be in MCA at all.

The biggest categories right now: Telecom Equipment & Supplies (1,626), Computer Peripherals (1,612), Communication Equipments & Services (1,230), Computers- New (773), Software Development (771). Areas with the most businesses in this list

Andheri East (325), Malad West (157), Andheri West (155), Kandivali West (109), Goregaon East (104), Borivali West (92), Goregaon West (76), Mulund West (67).

Many rows leave the area blank, so read this as a sample of where small firms cluster rather than a map of the city's IT trade. Some Navi Mumbai firms, such as those in Vashi, give Mumbai as their city and are included.

Businesses that sell to Mumbai's IT firms

  • Information security auditors and compliance consultants, since software firms working for banks, insurers and brokers face regular client audits.
  • Cloud, hosting and leased-line providers, and the system integrators who wire offices in Andheri, Powai and Airoli.
  • Commercial property brokers, co-working operators and fit-out contractors in BKC, Andheri and Powai.
  • Distributors of laptops, printers, storage and networking gear who supply the Lamington Road dealers and resellers.
  • Recruiters, training institutes and group health insurance advisers for growing teams.

Working the Mumbai list

  1. Split by category first. A hardware dealer on Lamington Road buys stock; a Powai software firm buys services. That means two sheets and two scripts.
  2. Write to software firms, ring the dealers. Software teams live in email and calendar invites; hardware and telecom dealers answer the phone in shop hours.
  3. Open with one clear line. For example: "Hello, this is Farhan from Bayview Security. We run security tests for software companies whose clients are banks and brokers. Who handles client audits at your firm?"
  4. Group meetings by suburb. Andheri, Goregaon and Malad sit close together along the Western Express Highway; keep Powai for another day, and Airoli, Mahape and Wagle Estate for a third.
  5. Watch the client calendar. Firms that serve banks are usually stretched near the close of the financial year in March, so pitch new work before or after it.
  6. Expect paperwork. Larger firms ask for GST and PAN details, and sometimes an NDA, before a first order; our vendor registration guide lists the usual papers. Before calls and SMS, read the DND rules.
