India's jewellery hubs
Jewellery manufacturers in India work in clusters, each known for its own craft. Whether you are looking for suppliers or selling to the trade, start with the hubs:
- Mumbai. Zaveri Bazaar, near Kalbadevi, is the country's best-known wholesale market for gold jewellery, with workshops in the lanes around it. SEEPZ in Andheri is a large export zone for jewellery makers, and the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Bandra Kurla Complex is a centre of the diamond trade.
- Surat, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished, and where lab-grown diamond making has grown fast. The Surat Diamond Bourse opened in 2023.
- Jaipur, the centre for coloured gemstones and for kundan, meenakari and polki jewellery, around Johari Bazaar.
- Thrissur, in Kerala, with a large gold jewellery making industry that supplies jewellers across south India.
- Kolkata, around Bowbazar, whose karigars (craftsmen) are known for fine handmade gold work. Many of them also work in workshops in other cities.
- Rajkot, a big centre for gold and silver jewellery, with Soni Bazaar at its heart.
- Coimbatore, one of the main centres of gold jewellery making in Tamil Nadu.
Delhi's Chandni Chowk and Dariba Kalan, Hyderabad's pearl trade and many smaller towns add to these. Retail jewellers are everywhere: almost every town has a sarafa or jewellers' market. To meet many makers at once, go to the trade shows run by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), such as the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) in Mumbai, where manufacturers show their ranges to retailers.
Hallmarking: what every jeweller must follow
Hallmarking of gold jewellery and gold artefacts is mandatory in India in the districts the government has notified. In general terms:
- jewellers selling gold jewellery in those districts must register with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS);
- each piece is tested and marked at a BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centre, not by the jeweller;
- the hallmark has three parts: the BIS mark, the purity in carats and fineness (such as 22K916), and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) that belongs to that one piece. Since April 2023 only hallmarks with a HUID are valid;
- buyers can check a HUID in BIS's own app, BIS Care, which shows the purity and where the piece was hallmarked;
- small jewellers below a turnover limit and very light pieces are exempt. The details change from time to time, so check BIS's current rules.
Hallmarking changed how jewellers buy. A manufacturer who supplies pieces of consistent purity, ready for hallmarking, saves the retailer rejections at the centre. Hallmarking centres, and software that records each piece's HUID, are now part of the trade's supply chain.
Our jewellers list
Our Jewellery Shops list holds 52,002 jewellers in 227 cities: mostly retail shops and showrooms, the customers that jewellery makers sell to, along with wholesalers. 88% have a mobile number, 61% an email address and 71% the name of the owner or a contact person. 86% show a category, such as gold, diamond, silver or fashion jewellery. The biggest groups are in Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur and Bengaluru. The same data is sold for 12 states and 21 cities. Shops change hands and numbers, so check a sample before a large campaign.

How to approach jewellers
- Call when the shop is quiet. Most jewellers open in the late morning, and the first hour after opening, or a weekday afternoon, works best. Many markets close one day a week, and the day differs by city, so check before you plan visits.
- Plan around the season. Retail peaks around Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras, Diwali and the wedding season, and jewellers order from manufacturers well ahead. Show new designs weeks before those dates, not during them.
- Open with their customer. For example: "Namaste, sir. I'm calling from a Rajkot maker of light-weight 22 carat chains, all hallmarked with HUID. When gold prices are high, customers want lighter pieces; may I send our designs on WhatsApp before Dhanteras?"
- Earn trust slowly. Jewellers buy from people they know. References from other jewellers in their town, a visit with samples and a small first order count for more than a catalogue.
- Message on WhatsApp only those who agree to it, and follow the DND rules for calls. Our cold calling tips help with openers and objections.
Questions people ask
Is hallmarking mandatory for all gold jewellery?
For gold jewellery and artefacts sold in the notified districts, yes, with a six-digit HUID on each piece. Small jewellers below a turnover limit and very light pieces are exempt. The rules are updated from time to time, so check the BIS website.
How can I check a HUID?
Enter it in the BIS Care app, which has an option to verify a HUID. It shows the purity and the hallmarking details for that piece.
Where can I find jewellery manufacturers for wholesale?
Visit the hubs: Zaveri Bazaar in Mumbai, Johari Bazaar in Jaipur, Thrissur, Rajkot, Coimbatore and Bowbazar in Kolkata, or a trade show such as IIJS. For exporting makers, see our exporters and importers database guide, and for fashion jewellery the handicraft exporters guide.
Does the list include jewellery manufacturers?
It is mainly a list of jewellers: the shops, showrooms and wholesalers that makers sell to, though some list themselves as makers as well. For makers in one hub, start from that city's list and its category column, or ask us for data we don't list.
