Chennai's hospitals, from Park Town to OMR

This guide is for suppliers, labs and service firms working from a list of hospitals in Chennai. If you need treatment, contact the hospital itself, and in an emergency call 112, or 108 for an ambulance.

Chennai is one of India's best-known cities for hospital care, drawing patients from other states and from abroad. For a seller, its hospitals fall into a few groups:

  • The big government hospitals. Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital opposite Chennai Central, Government Stanley Hospital in the north, the Kilpauk Medical College hospital and Government Royapettah Hospital, all teaching hospitals that buy through central procurement and tenders.
  • Greams Road and Nungambakkam. Home to some of the city's best-known private hospitals, with formal purchase departments and vendor approval.
  • The central and southern neighbourhoods. T Nagar, Kodambakkam, Mylapore, Alwarpet and Adyar, with specialist hospitals, eye and maternity centres, and doctor-owned nursing homes.
  • The west. Kilpauk, Chetpet, Anna Nagar, Vadapalani and Porur, with large private and university hospitals and many mid-size ones.
  • The southern suburbs. Velachery, OMR and GST Road towards Tambaram, where newer hospitals have followed the IT parks and housing.

Who sells to Chennai hospitals

  • Equipment and its upkeep: dealers, service engineers and maintenance contracts for monitors, ventilators, OT equipment, imaging and lab analysers.
  • Monsoon readiness. The north-east monsoon brings heavy rain from October to December, and floods in past years have reached hospital basements and power rooms. Pumps, waterproofing, generator and electrical checks sell before October.
  • Services for travelling patients. Interpreters, serviced flats near the hospital belts, airport transfers and travel desks, for the patients who come from other states and countries.
  • Medicines and diagnostics: pharma and surgical distributors, and labs that take samples from smaller hospitals and nursing homes.
  • Claims and software: hospital software, billing, and desks that handle insurance and scheme claims.
  • Daily services: linen and laundry, housekeeping, security, nurse staffing, medical gases, lift upkeep and biomedical waste collection.

Government hospitals in Tamil Nadu get most medicines and much equipment through the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC), which buys centrally by tender; other purchases go through tenders and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).

Checking Chennai hospitals for free

  • Clinical establishment registration. Tamil Nadu registers private clinical establishments under its own law, through the health department in each district. Registration proves a hospital may operate, not who buys for it.
  • The health schemes. The Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, run together with Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, lists its empanelled hospitals, and CGHS publishes the private hospitals empanelled in Chennai. Only hospitals that joined appear.
  • NABH. The accreditation board's website lists accredited hospitals, useful if you sell quality, audit or accreditation services.

Each confirms that a hospital exists and is approved for something. None gives you a purchase officer's name, a mobile number or a file you can sort by area.

Inside our list of hospitals in Chennai

The Hospitals & Nursing Homes in Chennai list has 721 entries. 42% have a mobile number and 85% a landline, usually the reception or board line; 78% include an email address, and 57% a contact person's name. Emails outnumber mobiles in this file, so a short email followed by a call to the board line often works best. Sixty real rows and a free Excel sample are on the list page. City lists cost ₹499 each, paid by UPI.

Most entries are private hospitals, nursing homes and general hospitals. About 58% of rows have a category, so read the names too: "nursing home", "maternity", "eye" or "children's" usually tells you the type. A few rows may be firms that serve hospitals; set those aside.

Where the entries cluster

The areas with the most entries, post office labels aside. Many rows have no area, so this is not a ranking of the city:

  • Kilpauk: 19
  • Anna Nagar: 16
  • T Nagar: 15
  • Adyar: 13
  • Kodambakkam: 13
  • Mylapore: 12
  • Ashok Nagar: 9
  • Chetpet: 9

Calling and visiting Chennai hospitals

  1. Divide the city into runs. The north (Park Town, Royapuram, Perambur), the centre (Nungambakkam, Kilpauk, Chetpet, Anna Nagar), the south (T Nagar, Mylapore, Adyar, Velachery) and the suburbs (OMR, GST Road, Porur). Keep each day inside one.
  2. Find the signatory. Large hospitals have a purchase office, a biomedical engineering team and often a vendor registration form. In a nursing home, the owner doctor decides, sometimes with a senior nurse who keeps the stock.
  3. Use Tamil where you can. English is standard in corporate hospitals, but a Tamil greeting is welcome with owners and store staff.
  4. Open plainly. For example: "Vanakkam, sir. I'm Priya from a Guindy firm that services X-ray and CT equipment, with engineers based in Anna Nagar and Velachery. Who handles imaging maintenance at your hospital?"
  5. Mind the calendar. Pongal in mid-January slows everything for several days, and the monsoon months make site visits unreliable. Close maintenance and stock-up deals by September.
  6. Stay within the rules. Check the DND rules before promotional calls or SMS.

Questions people ask

Does the Chennai list include Tambaram and the other suburbs?

It covers hospitals whose address gives Chennai as the city, and many suburban ones do. Those that give Tambaram, Chengalpattu or Kanchipuram are in the Tamil Nadu list; the list builder can combine several places in one file.

Can I get a list of hospitals in Chennai with email IDs?

Yes: 78% of rows in ours have an email address. Keep the first email short, with one clear question, and expect some addresses to have changed since the last update.

How do I sell to government hospitals in Chennai?

Through TNMSC for medicines and much of the equipment, and through tenders and GeM for other items. For the city's other industries, see our list of companies in Chennai.
