List of companies in India: companies database with contacts

The official company registers, what each one leaves out, and where to get a companies database with phone numbers and emails.

Why no single list of companies in India is complete

People searching for a list of companies in India often expect one official file. It does not exist, because Indian businesses register in different places depending on their legal form and size:

  • Companies and LLPs (private limited, public limited, one person companies and limited liability partnerships) register with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).
  • Partnership firms may register with the state Registrar of Firms, and many never do.
  • Sole proprietorships, the most common kind of business in India, have no central register at all. They appear in GST if their turnover or trade requires it, in Udyam if they register as an MSME, and in local shop and trade licences.

So "complete" depends on what you mean. A register of companies misses most shops, traders and small workshops. A list built for selling needs something else again: a phone number, an email address, a city and some idea of what the business does.

MCA, GST and Udyam: what each register gives, and what it leaves out

MCA: companies and LLPs

The MCA portal gives free master data for any company or LLP: its CIN, status, registered office and directors. It is detailed and well structured. For sales it lacks three things: phone numbers, an up-to-date picture of what each company actually does, and every business that is not a company or LLP. Many registered companies are struck off or dormant, so the status matters, and the registered office is sometimes an accountant's address rather than the place where the business works.

GST: businesses registered for tax

The GST portal's public taxpayer search shows a business's legal name, trade name, status and address when you enter its GSTIN or PAN. It reaches far more businesses than MCA, proprietors included, but you can look up only one number at a time, and the result has no phone number or email.

Udyam: registered MSMEs

The Udyam portal lets you confirm that an MSME registration number is genuine. It checks a number you already have; it is not a directory you can browse for contacts.

All three are good for checking a business before you trade with it, and our company search guide shows each look-up step by step. None of them is a companies list you can work through on the phone.

A companies database with phone numbers and emails

Our business directory is, in effect, a company list for the whole country: 78,49,029 businesses across India. 89% have a mobile number, 49% an email address and 40% a contact person's name; 83% carry a PIN code, so you can sort by area. Most rows do not say what the business does, so the directory suits reaching every kind of business in a place, not one trade. It is sold for 34 states and 253 cities rather than as one all-India file, and every list page shows 60 real rows before you buy.

Owners and proprietors

If you want the person who owns the business rather than its front desk, the owners list is the closer fit:

Companies list by industry

Most buyers do not want every company; they want the ones that could buy from them. That is what industry lists are for. Starleads sells 6,318 lists across 140 industries, many of them also by state and city. You can mix industries and cities in one file with the list builder. A few of the industry guides:

Every list is on the browse page. If the trade you want is missing, request a custom list.

From a company list to a shortlist: a worked example

Say you make electric motors in Coimbatore and want factories around Pune that use them.

  1. Start narrow. Take an industry list for Pune, such as manufacturers or machinery makers, rather than the whole city directory. You want a few hundred likely buyers, not lakhs of businesses.
  2. Sort by what you can use. Put rows with both a mobile number and a contact name first; those are the ones you can call this week.
  3. Remove who you already know. Match the file against your customer and enquiry records so no existing buyer gets a cold call.
  4. Check the big ones. Before offering credit, look up your top twenty prospects on MCA or GST to confirm the legal name and that they are active.
  5. Call with a reason. Late morning on a weekday is a good time to find a plant's owner or purchase manager at a desk. Open with something specific, such as "We supply motors to pump makers in Coimbatore and are looking for two or three OEM customers in Chakan", and expect questions on price, delivery time, warranty and service support near their plant.
  6. Keep the list clean. Note who asks not to be contacted and never call them again, and follow the DND rules for promotional calls and SMS.

Questions people ask

Where can I get a companies email list?

Our business directory has 78,49,029 businesses, 49% with an email address. For an email campaign, the industry lists that are nearly all email work better. Our business email list guide shows which those are and how to send without landing in spam.

Can I download the list of all companies registered with MCA?

The free MCA service shows one company's master data at a time. Even a full copy of the register would give you registered offices and directors, not phone numbers, and it would leave out every proprietor and partnership firm.

Can I get companies in one city only?

Yes. The directory is sold for 253 cities, and many industry lists are sold by city too. The list builder combines several cities or industries in one sheet.

Is a companies database the same as a list of company directors?

No. A companies database lists businesses with their phone numbers and addresses. Directors' names are on MCA, but not their phone numbers; lists of senior people are a separate kind of list.
