Logistics companies in Chennai: who does what, and where

People who search for logistics companies in Chennai usually want one of two things: a firm to move their goods, or a list of logistics firms to sell to. Our Chennai logistics list, with phone numbers and emails, serves both and is described below. Chennai is one of India's main gateways for cargo, and its logistics trade follows the ports, the highways and the factory belts:

  • The ports: Chennai Port next to George Town, Kamarajar Port at Ennore to the north, and the port at Kattupalli beyond it, handling containers, vehicles for export, coal, oil and project cargo.
  • Container freight stations and yards: clustered around Manali and Madhavaram and along the roads north towards Ennore and Ponneri, where export cargo is stuffed and import boxes are cleared and destuffed.
  • Customs brokers and freight forwarders: offices near the Custom House on Rajaji Salai and across the city, handling sea and air shipments and the paperwork that goes with them.
  • Air cargo: forwarders, courier firms and cargo agents around the airport's cargo complex at Meenambakkam.
  • The manufacturing belt: Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Irungattukottai on the Bengaluru highway, and Mahindra World City on GST Road, where car, component and electronics plants need inbound parts and outbound vehicles moved on tight schedules. Warehouses have spread along these roads to serve them.
  • Road transport: fleet owners, transport contractors and booking agents running loads on the highways to Bengaluru, to Andhra Pradesh and Kolkata, and south along GST Road.

So a Chennai logistics list mixes very different businesses. A customs broker in Parrys, a trailer fleet in Manali and a warehouse operator in Oragadam buy different things and need different pitches.

Official records, and what they miss

  • Customs. Customs brokers are licensed by Customs, and Chennai Customs publishes public notices on procedures and approved facilities such as container freight stations. Useful for checking a broker's licence, silent on phone numbers.
  • The port authorities publish tariffs, notices and vessel information for port users. They are not directories of the firms that work at the port.
  • GST and the e-way bill system. A GSTIN search shows a transport firm's legal name, address and status, and transporters without GST registration enrol for a transporter ID on the e-way bill portal. Neither gives you a searchable list.
  • Associations. Freight forwarders, customs brokers and lorry owners each have their own associations in the city, useful for meeting firms in person. Member books stay with members.
  • Freight apps and load boards help with a one-off load, but you see whoever is online that day, not a steady partner.

Our list of logistics companies in Chennai

The Transporters & Logistics Companies in Chennai file holds 1,557 businesses. 98% have an email address and 60% a mobile number, while 42% give an office landline; 40% name a contact person. 98% carry an office address, which helps you group the firms near the port, in Manali or along the highways. Email is the strongest column, which suits forwarders and brokers who live in their inboxes: write first, then call. Sixty real rows are on the list page with a free Excel sample, and a city list costs ₹499.

Its biggest categories today:

  • Logistics Management: 510
  • Services Providers: 278
  • Manufacturers, Exporters: 160
  • Export/import: 111
  • Transport - Sea: 28
  • Transport - Road: 17

Some rows come from exporters, traders and service firms that describe themselves under logistics, so sort on the Category column and keep the kind of firm you want: road transport, sea freight, clearing and forwarding, or warehousing.

Logistics offices move and staff change, so call a sample of your segment before you plan a full campaign, and expect some numbers to have changed.

The shippers: Chennai's exporters and importers

If you run a logistics firm and want customers, these are the businesses that ship through Chennai's ports:

Our exporters and importers guide explains what these lists hold.

The Transporters & Logistics Companies in Tamil Nadu list adds the transporters and forwarders that gave another town of Tamil Nadu as their address.

For the whole country, the All-India transporters list holds 44,078 businesses, sold as bulk data at ₹1,999. Every other Chennai list is on the Chennai page.

How to approach logistics companies in Chennai

  1. Pick the right hour. Late morning, after the night's arrivals are sorted, suits most transporters. Forwarders and brokers are busiest near vessel cut-offs and at month-end, so avoid those days for a sales call.
  2. Open in Tamil, continue in English. For example: "Vanakkam, this is Priya from a GPS tracking firm in Ambattur. We track container trailers between the Manali freight stations and the Oragadam plants, with alerts for long halts. How many vehicles do you run?" Our cold calling tips cover the next steps.
  3. If you are hiring, be exact about the load. Route, weight, volume, how often and the type of vehicle. Check the firm's GSTIN, ask for references, get a lorry receipt for every consignment, and for customs work ask for the broker's licence number.
  4. Plan visits by zone. The port and George Town, Manali and the north, and the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam belt each make a day. Container traffic on the port roads is heavy, so leave extra time.
  5. Watch the weather. The northeast monsoon, from October to December, can flood roads and slow cargo, and firms are busy firefighting. Follow up after the rain.
  6. Follow the rules. Read the DND rules before promotional calls or SMS.

Questions people ask

Which areas of Chennai have the most logistics companies?

Forwarders and brokers gather near the port and the Custom House, freight stations and trailer fleets around Manali and Madhavaram, and warehouses along the Bengaluru highway and GST Road. For the city's factories and markets, see our list of companies in Chennai.

Is there a list of container freight stations in Chennai?

Customs approves each freight station, and the operators are easy to find by name, but no public list gives their managers' phone numbers. A contact list fills that gap.

Are transporters in Sriperumbudur in the Chennai list?

Only those that give Chennai as their city. Rows follow the address each business gives, so the rest sit in the Tamil Nadu list. Our transporters list guide covers the trade across India.

Do courier companies appear in this list?

A few, but parcel and courier firms are a different trade. See our courier companies guide.
