The quick answer
No government body publishes a free list of chemical companies in Mumbai with names, phone numbers and emails. The two industry bodies headquartered in the city, Chemexcil and the Indian Chemical Council, serve their members and don't hand out a contact directory. Starleads' Chemicals, Plastics & Rubber in Mumbai list had 24,935 businesses on 29 October 2026: chemical makers and traders, pigment, resin and adhesive firms, and plastics and rubber units. 81% have a mobile number and 52% an email. It costs ₹499 plus 18% GST, and you can download 60 rows free first.
The one thing to understand before you use any list of chemical manufacturers in Mumbai: the city is where the chemical industry keeps its offices, traders and head offices, while most of the plants sit outside the city limits, along the Thane-Belapur Road in Navi Mumbai, in Taloja, in Thane, Dombivli and Ambernath, and further north at Tarapur near Boisar. This guide maps that belt with Starleads' figures, shows which list covers which part, explains the pollution category and GST checks that matter when you buy chemicals or sell to chemical plants, and sets out the calling rules.
Chemical companies in Mumbai: offices in the city, plants in the belt
Starleads' data shows the split clearly. Mumbai's chemicals list (24,935 rows) is more than 30 times the size of the Thane list (765) and nearly 50 times the Navi Mumbai list (516), even though much of the region's manufacturing is in those two places. That is because a Mumbai row is very often an office: a corporate head office, a sales office, a trading firm or an importer. We read the free 60-row samples of all three city lists before writing this, and the addresses tell the story.
| Area | What the free samples show | Starleads list that holds it |
|---|---|---|
| South Mumbai: Masjid, Kalbadevi, Ballard Estate | Traders and head offices. Three of the 60 Mumbai sample rows have the Masjid PIN 400009 (plastics and multi-range chemical firms), one has a Kalbadevi address, and one large chemical company lists its office at Ballard Estate. | Mumbai |
| Andheri, Sakinaka, Marol, Goregaon, Bhandup, Vikhroli | Industrial estates in the suburbs with small and mid-sized units and offices. 9 of the 60 Mumbai rows are in Andheri and 9 give an "industrial estate" address. | Mumbai |
| BKC, Santacruz, Chembur | Corporate offices: in the sample, a multinational chemical company at BKC, a paint company's head office in Santacruz East and a fertiliser company with a Chembur PIN. | Mumbai |
| Thane-Belapur Road: Rabale, Mahape, Turbhe, Pawane (TTC industrial area) | The densest manufacturing cluster in the samples. 20 of the 60 Navi Mumbai rows mention Belapur Road and 19 an MIDC industrial area; Rabale (10) and Turbhe (8) lead. | Navi Mumbai |
| Taloja MIDC | Chemical makers and suppliers with PIN 410208; 4 of the 60 Navi Mumbai sample rows. | Navi Mumbai |
| Thane: Wagle Estate, Kolshet Road | Plastics moulders, adhesives and coatings makers, and offices of multinational chemical firms. Wagle Estate has 6 of the 60 Thane sample rows and Kolshet Road 4. | Thane |
| Dombivli and Ambernath MIDC | Chemical and pharmaceutical-chemical units; 5 of the 60 Thane rows are in Dombivli's MIDC area and one in Ambernath's. | Thane |
| Tarapur MIDC (Boisar) and Vasai | Chemical plants at Tarapur MIDC (organics, surfactants, speciality chemicals in the sample) and plastics units at Vasai. The list files them under Thane (3 Boisar and 4 Vasai rows in the sample), though one Tarapur address itself names Palghar taluka. | Thane, or the Maharashtra list |
The practical rule: if you want to buy from a chemical maker and visit its plant, the Navi Mumbai and Thane lists are where the factories are; if you want to sell to a company's purchase or corporate team, or reach traders and distributors, the Mumbai list is where the offices are. Many large companies appear in both, once at the head office and once at the plant.
The free samples also show how wide the "chemical" label is. Rows in the Mumbai sample include petrochemical and lubricant companies, fertiliser makers, a fluorochemicals company, laboratory chemical suppliers, construction chemical firms, pigment makers, plastic pipe and bag makers, foam rubber units and fibreglass products. The Navi Mumbai sample adds perfumery chemicals, surfactants, resins, pigments and colours, and amines. If you need one kind of chemical, you will filter by category and company name; there is no single "chemical company" in the trade.
What Starleads' data shows for chemical companies in Mumbai and the region
The figures below are counts of contacts in Starleads' data as shown on the list pages on 29 October 2026. They are not an official census of the chemical industry, and the lists overlap: one company can be in more than one list.
| List | Contacts | Mobile / email | Biggest categories or places |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chemicals, Plastics & Rubber in Mumbai | 24,935 | 81% / 52% (50% landline) | Chemicals (8,020), Pigments (916), Chemicals- Multi Range (714) |
| Chemicals, Plastics & Rubber in Thane | 765 | 55% / 82% | Chemicals (349), Chemical (39), Furniture- Plastic Moulded (13) |
| Chemicals, Plastics & Rubber in Navi Mumbai | 516 | 63% / 88% | Chemicals (326), Chemical (25) |
| Chemicals, Plastics & Rubber in Maharashtra | 32,528 | 81% / 58% | 53 cities and towns: Mumbai, Pune (4,367), Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nagpur (349), Nashik |
| Pharma & Chemical Companies in Mumbai | 922 | 68% / 39% | Chemicals- Pharmaceutical (269), Bulk Drugs (88), Pharmaceutical Raw Material (85) |
| Importers in Mumbai | 30,695 | 88% / 92% | Mostly "Paper Importers & Exporters" (26,909); filter for chemical names |
What the numbers say:
- Mumbai is by far the biggest chemicals list in Starleads' data. It is first of the 29 cities with a chemicals, plastics and rubber list, ahead of Delhi (6,109), Bengaluru (4,810), Pune (4,367) and Vadodara (3,294), and it holds 77% of the Maharashtra list. Maharashtra in turn is first of 14 states, ahead of Gujarat (11,875) and Delhi (7,550).
- The city is an office and trading list; the belt is an email list. In Mumbai, 81% of rows have a mobile and half a landline. In Thane and Navi Mumbai, email coverage is higher (82% and 88%) and mobile coverage lower (55% and 63%), which fits factories that list a works number and a company email rather than an owner's phone.
- "Chemicals" is the core of the Mumbai list, but not all of it. The three biggest categories add up to 9,650 of 24,935 rows. The rest are plastics, rubber, packaging, polymers and many rows without a clear category; in the free Mumbai sample, 14 of 60 rows had no category at all.
- Pharma is a separate list. Bulk drug, API and pharmaceutical chemical companies are in the 922-row Pharma & Chemical Companies list; see our guide to pharma companies in Mumbai if that is your market.
- Importers are a big part of the chemical trade, but the list needs filtering. The Mumbai importers list has 30,695 rows, most in a broad "Paper Importers & Exporters" category; search the company name column for words such as "chem", "polymer", "pigment" or "dye" to find the chemical importers and distributors.
Across India, the Chemicals, Plastics & Rubber in India list has 77,756 businesses, 79% of them with a mobile number. The biggest city lists are below.
- Mumbai 24,935 contacts · 52% email · 81% mobile ₹499
- Bengaluru 4,810 contacts · 56% email · 97% mobile ₹499
- Pune 4,367 contacts · 70% email · 88% mobile ₹499
- Vadodara 3,294 contacts · 76% email · 82% mobile ₹499
- Ahmedabad 3,086 contacts · 84% email · 91% mobile ₹499
- Chennai 2,921 contacts · 89% email · 63% mobile ₹499
- Hyderabad 2,468 contacts · 89% email · 71% mobile ₹499
- Kolkata 1,724 contacts · 91% email · 56% mobile ₹499
- Jaipur 1,660 contacts · 40% email · 91% mobile ₹499
- Surat 1,464 contacts · 64% email · 90% mobile ₹499
- New Delhi 1,191 contacts · 81% email · 20% mobile ₹499
- Gurugram 971 contacts · 77% email · 83% mobile ₹499
Where the lists fall short
We read the three free samples before writing this. These are the problems to plan for:
- Many records in the belt are old. In the Navi Mumbai sample, 12 of 60 emails are on old internet provider domains such as vsnl.net, rediffmail.com and sify.com, and 46 of 60 rows have no mobile (the full list has a mobile for 63%, so the sample is weaker than the whole). In the Thane sample, 9 emails are on such domains and 36 of 60 rows have no mobile. Check the company's own website for a current number before you call.
- The city column follows the record, not the map. Tarapur, Boisar and Vasai rows sit in the Thane list, far north of Thane city; a few Navi Mumbai rows carry a Mumbai office address (Mahim, Dadar). Sort by PIN code to plan visits.
- Not every row is a chemical company. The samples include a packers and movers firm, an advertising photographer, a crockery store, pump makers and engineering works. Read the company name and category, and drop what doesn't fit.
- Big groups appear more than once. One fertiliser company has two rows in the Mumbai sample, and one chemical company appears in both the Thane and Navi Mumbai samples at different addresses. Merge them before you assign leads to callers.
Starleads doesn't promise that every number still works: companies move, merge and change names, which is why the 60-row sample is free. In the list builder you can pick only rows with a mobile or an email.
Red, orange or green: the pollution category of a chemical plant
Most chemical manufacturing needs a pollution board consent to set up and to operate, and the category of the industry decides how strict that is. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) uses the Central Pollution Control Board's classification; its industry categorisation page (read on 29 October 2026) links the CPCB's January 2025 report on classifying sectors into red, orange, green, white and blue categories. The report scores each sector's pollution index out of 100: 80 or more is red, 55 to under 80 is orange, 25 to under 55 is green and under 25 is white. It classifies 419 sectors and sub-sectors: red (125), orange (137), green (94), white (54) and blue (9).
These are the report's categories for the kinds of businesses that fill Mumbai's chemicals lists:
| Sector in the CPCB report | Pollution index | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Organic chemicals including halogenated hydrocarbons (solid/liquid fuel) | 93.6 | Red |
| Basic inorganic chemicals and electro chemicals, including acid manufacture | 90.5 | Red |
| Dyes, dye intermediates and pigments made by chemical synthesis | 96.3 | Red |
| Pesticide technical (organic chemicals based) | 94 | Red |
| Solvent-based paints and varnishes | 94.4 | Red |
| Paints and varnishes, only blending and mixing | 77.3 | Orange |
| Synthetic detergents and soaps | 82.8 | Red |
| Synthetic rubber | 68.8 | Orange |
| Polythene and plastic processed products (virgin or compostable plastic) | 37 | Green |
| Fertilizers (urea) | 92.5 | Red |
Why a buyer or supplier should care:
- For buyers, a red-category maker needs a valid consent to operate. Ask for a copy, check the validity date and the products and quantities it allows, and make sure the chemical you are buying is on it. A plant that is shut for a consent problem cannot deliver your order.
- For suppliers, red and orange category plants are the ones that buy effluent treatment, pollution control equipment, monitoring, lab testing and hazardous waste services. The category tells you who needs what before you call.
- For anyone choosing a site, the category decides where a plant may be set up and what it must install. The report notes that the classification is a tool for "progressive environmental management", so check the MPCB's current rules for your own case rather than relying on this summary.
How to find and check a chemical manufacturer or supplier in Mumbai, step by step
- Write the specification first. Chemical name, CAS number, grade (technical, laboratory, pharma, food), purity, pack size, monthly quantity, delivery point, and whether you need a certificate of analysis with every batch. A trader can quote from that in a day; without it, every call starts from zero.
- Decide whether you need a maker or a trader. Small and irregular quantities are usually easier from a trader or authorised distributor in Mumbai, who holds stock of many products. Regular bulk quantities, a custom grade or a long contract point to the maker's plant in the belt.
- Download the free sample and pick the list. Mumbai for traders, distributors and head offices; Navi Mumbai and Thane for plants; the Maharashtra list if you want Pune, Nagpur and Nashik too. Filter the category column for your product family and search company names for it.
- Shortlist five to ten and check each one. Look up the GSTIN on the GST taxpayer search: it should be active, with a legal name that matches the firm and a Maharashtra registration. For companies, check MCA's master data; for importers and exporters, the Importer-Exporter Code. Our company search guide shows each look-up.
- Ask for the documents that matter in chemicals. A safety data sheet, a recent certificate of analysis, the manufacturer's name if you are buying from a trader, and for a plant, the pollution consent and its validity. A supplier who can't send a safety data sheet for a hazardous chemical is a warning sign.
- Test a sample in your own process. Pay for or request a sample, test it against your specification, and keep a retained sample of the approved lot.
- Get a written quotation with the GST rate and HSN code. Price per kg or per drum, packing, freight, payment terms, delivery time and the GST rate. Compare quotations line by line.
- Agree terms for repeat supply. Specification tolerance, what happens with an off-spec batch, lead time, and a price review clause for raw material swings. For a long relationship with a distributor, our distributor agreement guide covers the clauses.
GST on chemicals after the September 2025 rate changes
Most chemicals were not part of the big rate cuts of 2025, but a few fertiliser inputs were. The GST Council's press release on its 56th meeting (read on 29 October 2026) lists these changes in its fertilizer sector table, with the new rates on goods taking effect from 22 September 2025:
- 18% to 5%: sulphuric acid (2807), nitric acid (2808) and ammonia (2814). The release calls this a "correction of inverted duty structure in fertilizer sector".
- 12% to 5%: gibberellic acid, a named list of bio-pesticides (including Bacillus thuringiensis strains, Trichoderma and neem-based pesticides) and micronutrients covered under the Fertilizer Control Order, 1985, made by manufacturers registered under it.
For a Mumbai buyer of sulphuric or nitric acid, a quotation that still adds 18% is a quotation to question. For every other chemical, ask the supplier for the HSN code on the quotation and confirm the rate with your accountant; the release is a summary, and the rate depends on the exact product and its use.
The industry bodies headquartered in Mumbai
Two national chemical industry bodies have their head offices in Mumbai. Neither sells a contact list, but both are useful to know:
- Chemexcil. The Basic Chemicals, Cosmetics & Dyes Export Promotion Council (read on 29 October 2026) says it was set up by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry in 1963 and has more than 4,000 members, large and small manufacturers and merchant exporters, in four panels: dyes and dye intermediates; basic inorganic and organic chemicals including agrochemicals; cosmetics, soaps, toiletries and essential oils; and speciality chemicals, lubricants and castor oil. It says it helps members locate sources and is the nodal agency for compliance with the EU's REACH legislation. Its website has a member directory and a trade enquiry section. Its head office is at Jhansi Castle, 7 Cooperage Road, Mumbai 400001. In October 2026 its home page reported a seminar, held with the Narcotics Control Bureau, on a voluntary code of conduct against the diversion of precursor chemicals, a reminder that some chemicals carry extra rules.
- Indian Chemical Council (ICC). The ICC, formerly the Indian Chemical Manufacturers Association, was established in 1938 and works on the growth of the chemical industry through events, training, awards and policy advice; its website lists Responsible Care among its major initiatives. Its registered office and national headquarters is at Sir Vithaldas Chambers, 16 Mumbai Samachar Marg, Mumbai 400001.
Industry events and member directories are a good way to meet the larger companies. A contact list fills the other side: the thousands of small and mid-sized makers, traders and distributors that don't join associations or exhibit at fairs.
Selling to chemical companies in Mumbai
If you supply the chemical trade, the right list depends on who signs the order:
- Raw materials, solvents and intermediates: the purchase team at the plant, or the owner of a small unit. Start with the Navi Mumbai and Thane lists for plants, and the Mumbai list's "Chemicals- Multi Range" and "Chemical Dlrs" categories for traders who resell.
- Packaging (drums, carboys, HDPE containers, bags): plants and traders alike; see our packaging companies guide for the rules on plastic packaging.
- Pollution control, effluent treatment, lab testing and safety equipment: the red and orange category plants in the belt; Thane and Navi Mumbai rows with an MIDC address are the obvious first calls.
- Logistics, freight forwarding and customs clearing: importers and exporters; filter the importers list for chemical names, and see our freight forwarders guide for how that trade works.
- Software, ERP and finance: the owner or finance head; the Mumbai list names a contact person for 77% of rows.
Large companies buy through purchase departments. Starleads' Purchase & Procurement Heads in Maharashtra list has 2,14,044 people, 1,28,124 of them in Mumbai, with a mobile for 92%; our guide to reaching purchase and procurement managers explains how to use it. For the national picture, see our list of chemical companies in India, and for Gujarat's chemical hubs, chemical companies in Vadodara. Paint makers are covered in our paint companies guide, and other Mumbai industries in the list of companies in Mumbai.
Calling, SMS and email within TRAI's rules
Many small chemical traders list the owner's mobile as the business number. The rules on commercial communication apply to those numbers whichever list they came from:
- DND (NCPR). TRAI's customer preference registration page (checked on 29 October 2026) lets anyone block commercial communication fully or by category, by mode, by time band and by day, by SMS or a call to 1909, by IVRS, an app or an OTP-based web portal. Check numbers before a promotional campaign; our DND check guide shows how.
- DLT: registered senders, headers, templates and consent. TRAI's advice to senders lists what any sender of bulk communication must complete: registration as a principal entity, a registered header, registered content templates and, where needed, registered consent templates and the customer's consent. Send promotional SMS only through a DLT-registered provider; our DLT registration guide explains the steps.
- Consent for follow-ups. On the first call, ask how the company wants your price list or technical data (email, WhatsApp or SMS), note the answer and the date, and stop when someone says no.
- Email. The belt lists are strong on email. Send from your own domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up (see our SPF, DKIM and DMARC guide), put the product, grade and your GSTIN in the first lines, and offer an easy opt-out.
Starleads sells lists of businesses and professionals only. It doesn't sell lists of chemists' customers, factory workers, job seekers or any other private individuals. For Starleads' figures across India, see the Insights page.
Questions people ask
Which are the top chemical companies in Mumbai?
Many of India's large chemical, paint, fertiliser and speciality chemical companies have head offices or offices in Mumbai, and several appear in the free 60-row sample of Starleads' Mumbai list. "Top" depends on what you measure (sales, exports, employees), so use company annual reports for rankings. For contacts, the full Mumbai list has 24,935 rows, and the largest companies often appear more than once, at the head office and at plants in Navi Mumbai or Thane.
Where are chemical industries in Mumbai located?
Offices and traders are in the city: Masjid and Kalbadevi, Ballard Estate, BKC and the suburban industrial estates of Andheri, Sakinaka, Goregaon and Bhandup. Plants are mostly in the belt around it: the TTC industrial area along the Thane-Belapur Road (Rabale, Mahape, Turbhe, Pawane), Taloja, Wagle Estate in Thane, Dombivli and Ambernath MIDC, and Tarapur near Boisar.
How many chemical companies are there in Mumbai?
There is no official count. Starleads' data has 24,935 chemicals, plastics and rubber businesses in Mumbai, 765 in Thane and 516 in Navi Mumbai on 29 October 2026, and 32,528 across Maharashtra. These are counts of contacts in Starleads' data, not a census, and include traders and offices as well as plants.
Are chemical companies in Navi Mumbai in the Mumbai list?
No. Navi Mumbai has its own list of 516 rows, mostly in the TTC industrial area and Taloja; Thane has 765. If you want the whole region in one file, buy the Maharashtra list (32,528 rows) and filter the city column; it costs the same ₹499 as a city list.
Is there a list of chemical companies in Mumbai as a PDF?
Each Starleads list page has a free sample of 60 contacts as a PDF or Excel file, with numbers partly masked. The full list comes as an Excel workbook, which is easier to filter than a PDF. Free PDFs found online are usually old trade directories; check the dates before you rely on them.
What GST applies to chemicals bought in Mumbai?
It depends on the chemical's HSN code. The GST Council's 56th meeting cut sulphuric acid, nitric acid and ammonia from 18% to 5%, and some agricultural chemicals from 12% to 5%, from 22 September 2025. For anything else, get the HSN code on the quotation and confirm the rate with your accountant.
Do chemical plants near Mumbai need pollution consent?
Yes, chemical manufacturing needs consent from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. In the CPCB classification the MPCB uses, the main chemical manufacturing sectors (organic and inorganic chemicals, dyes and pigments, pesticides, solvent-based paints) are red, the strictest category. Ask a supplier's plant for its consent to operate and check that it is valid and covers the product you buy.
